APC AP9641 Network Management Card 3 — UPS Management plus Rack Temperature Monitoring
NMC3 · SmartSlotTemperature sensor included2 Universal I/O portsGigabit Ethernet
The APC AP9641 is the Network Management Card 3 (NMC3) with environmental monitoring for UPS units with a SmartSlot: it connects a Smart-UPS, Symmetra or Galaxy to your network and adds two Universal I/O sensor ports, with a temperature sensor included in the box, for small server rooms and network cabinets.
It does everything the AP9640 does — browser and SNMP management, email alerts, PowerChute Network Shutdown for orderly server shutdown, EcoStruxure IT support — and adds the ability to watch the temperature where your equipment actually sits. Optional sensors such as temperature/humidity probes or dry-contact I/O can be added later.
Before you order: Only for UPS units with a SmartSlot. It does not fit Easy UPS On-Line SRV (use AP9544), 3-phase Easy UPS 3S/3M/3L (use AP9547) or Back-UPS units without a slot. SUA Smart-UPS units need to be built after 2008 with UPS firmware 1.4.2 or later.
What's in the Box
- AP9641 Network Management Card 3
- Temperature sensor
- Micro-USB configuration cable
- Installation manual
What It Means in Practice
- The UPS gets an IP address: load, runtime, battery health and event log are visible from any browser.
- The included temperature sensor hangs in the rack or cabinet and triggers an alert when the room overheats — often the first sign of a failed air conditioner.
- Two Universal I/O ports accept APC temperature, temperature/humidity or dry-contact sensors, so you can add a door contact or humidity reading later.
- PowerChute Network Shutdown on servers or virtual hosts shuts everything down cleanly before the battery is exhausted.
What Will Not Work
- It will not fit a UPS without a SmartSlot.
- Third-party or NetBotz rack-appliance sensors are not universally supported — use the APC sensors listed as compatible (e.g. AP9335T, AP9335TH, AP9810).
- It manages only the UPS it is installed in, not PDUs or other UPS units.
- It needs a wired Ethernet connection; there is no built-in Wi-Fi.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where should the temperature sensor go?
Place it at the front (air intake) of the hottest equipment in the rack, not next to the UPS exhaust — that is the reading that predicts overheating.
Can I add a humidity sensor later?
Yes. The Universal I/O ports accept the APC AP9335TH temperature/humidity sensor and the AP9810 dry-contact accessory.
Is it a drop-in replacement for an AP9631?
Yes, it is the NMC3 successor and uses the same SmartSlot; settings are configured again on the new card.
Singular Expert Insight · Buyer's Guide
For most small server rooms the AP9641 is the better buy than the AP9640: the price difference is small and a temperature alert is often worth more than the UPS alert itself. Fit the sensor at the equipment intake and set a sensible threshold. If you are building the cabinet at the same time, see our
rack accessories.
✓ Buy it if you have a SmartSlot UPS and want UPS management plus temperature alerts for the room or rack.
✕ Skip it if you only need UPS status (AP9640 is enough) or your UPS is an Easy UPS SRV/3-phase model.
→ Also consider APC AP9640 — same card without sensor ports; APC NetBotz Rack Monitor 250A for full rack security and environmental monitoring.
