"Σκληροί Δίσκοι
Οι σκληροί δίσκοι είναι από τα βασικότερα κομμάτια ενός ηλεκτρονικού υπολογιστή. Είναι ο τόπος όπου φυλάγονται τα διάφορα αρχεία του χρήστη. Όσο πιο μεγάλος ο δίσκος, τόσο το καλύτερο γιατί θα έχετε περισσότερο χώρο για τα διάφορα αρχεία. Ονομάζονται “σκληροί δίσκοι” διότι είναι πράγματι μερικοί σκληροί δίσκοι κλεισμένοι σε ένα κουτί, που περιστρέφονται με ψιλή ταχύτητα και ένας βραχίονας γράφει και διαβάζει από και προς την επιφάνεια των δίσκων.
Οι σκληροί δίσκοι έχουν προχωρήσει αρκετά από τη δεκαετία του πενήντα όταν η ΙΒΜ τους πρωτόβγαλε στην αγορά. Τώρα οι δίσκοι είναι μικροί σε φυσικό μέγεθος και ανθεκτικοί.
Συνήθως έρχονται σε δύο μεγέθη: 3.5” για υπολογιστές γραφείου και 2.5” για φορητούς υπολογιστές. Παρόλο που οι 2,5” δίσκοι είναι για φορητούς, μπορούν να χρησιμοποιηθούν σε υπολογιστές γραφείου χωρίς πρόβλημα γιατί και οι δύο χρησιμοποιούν τα ίδια βύσματα τύπου SATA.
Παρόλο που η ΙΒΜ ήταν η εταιρία που έβγαλε τους σκληρούς δίσκους στην αγορά, υπάρχουν τώρα πολλοί άλλοι που βγάζουν ποιοτικούς δίσκους όπως Samsung, Western Digital, Seagate, Toshiba και Hitachi.

"Hard drives are one of the basic parts of the PC. It is where your software, photos, music, videos and every other file call “home”. The bigger the better basically as you will have more space, for more files. They are called “Hard Disk Drives” because they actually have a couple disks inside (one on top of each other) spinning and an arm with a read/write head reading and writing to and from the surface, much like the old vinyl record players.Hard disk drives (HDDs) have come a long way since the 50s when IBM first introduced them. They are now physically small, durable and reliable.They come in two common sizes, 3.5” for the PC and 2.5” for use in laptops, even though the laptop ones can easily be used in a PC as well. Both use the same SATA connectors now so all you have to do is plug one in.While IBM was the first company to make a hard drive, there are now a lot of others making high quality hard drives like Samsung, Western Digital, Seagate, Toshiba and Hitachi. "
