Server and data-centre cables in two groups: SAS and NVMe cables that connect RAID controllers, HBAs and backplanes to drives, and direct attach copper (DAC) cables for short 10G, 25G, 40G and 100G links between switches and servers. Generic models from StarTech.com, Delock, Digitus and Intellinet, and original cable kits from HPE, Dell, Fujitsu, Lenovo and Cisco.

How to choose the right SAS or DAC cable
- Identify the connector by its SFF number. SFF-8087 (Mini SAS) and SFF-8643 (Mini SAS HD) are internal. SFF-8088 and SFF-8644 are their external versions. SFF-8654 (Slim SAS) and OCuLink appear on newer servers. SFF-8482 is the SAS drive connector with power, and SFF-8639 is U.2 NVMe.
- Forward or reverse breakout. Forward goes from a controller port to individual drives. Reverse goes from motherboard SATA ports to a backplane. They look the same but are not interchangeable.
- Sideband. Some backplanes use sideband signals for drive LEDs and slot detection. If yours does, choose a cable with sideband.
- Server cable kits from HPE, Dell, Fujitsu, Lenovo and Cisco are made for specific server models and drive cages. Check the server model and generation before ordering.
- DAC speed must match the port. SFP+ is 10G, SFP28 is 25G, QSFP+ is 40G and QSFP28 is 100G. A DAC only links two ports of the same type.
- Distance. Passive DAC cables cover short runs within a rack or to the next rack. For longer runs use active optical cables (AOC) or fibre with transceivers.
- Switch compatibility. Some Cisco, HPE, Dell and other switches accept only coded cables. Choose the model marked compatible with your switch brand, or the vendor's own cable.
- Stacking cables fit only the stacking ports of the switch family they are made for.
