VGA cables for monitors, projectors and KVM setups — male-to-male monitor cables, male-to-female extensions, splitter cables, DVI to VGA and right-angle adapters — plus links to converters from HDMI, DisplayPort and USB-C to VGA. From Equip, StarTech.com, Digitus, Delock and other brands.
Which VGA cable do I need?
- Monitor cable (male to male) — connects a computer to a monitor or projector. Extension cable (male to female) — lengthens an existing cable.
- Length and picture quality — VGA is an analog signal, so long or thin cables cause blur or ghosting. For 1920×1080, a shielded cable with ferrite cores works well up to about 5 m; for longer runs choose a premium (coax) cable or a VGA extender.
- No audio — VGA carries only video; sound needs a separate 3.5 mm cable.
- Two screens — a passive splitter cable weakens the signal; for two monitors or a monitor plus projector, a powered video splitter gives a cleaner picture.
From a newer computer: HDMI, DisplayPort and USB-C are digital, so they need an active converter to VGA — a simple cable will not work. Only a DVI-I port (with the analog pins) connects to VGA with a passive cable.
