How to choose the right print server
- Check the printer's port. Most printers use USB; older printers and dot-matrix models use a parallel (Centronics) port. Choose a print server with the matching port.
- Printer-only or multifunction. A basic print server shares printing only. To scan and fax over the network from a multifunction printer, choose a multifunction (MFP) server or a USB device server with its own software.
- Original modules first. HP JetDirect, Lexmark MarkNet and Epson, Zebra and Intermec modules plug into supported printers and give full features. Check that your printer model is on the module's list.
- Wired or wireless. Wired servers are the most reliable. Wireless models suit printers far from a network socket.
- Drivers. You still need the printer's own driver on each computer. Very old printers may have no drivers for current Windows or macOS.
