How to choose the right modem
- Laptop 4G/5G modules (WWAN). These M.2 cards work only in laptops built for mobile broadband, with the WWAN slot and antennas already fitted. Choose the module listed for your laptop model; others may not be recognised.
- USB dongles and hotspots. A 4G USB dongle gives a single computer mobile internet, and many also share it over Wi-Fi. Make sure it is unlocked for your SIM.
- 5G modems for sites. Cellular modems such as UniFi 5G Max provide the internet connection to your existing router or gateway, as main line or backup. Outdoor versions give a stronger signal where reception indoors is weak.
- Phone-line internet (VDSL). A VDSL modem-router connects directly to the phone line. Check that it supports your provider's VDSL2 profile, or keep the provider's modem and add a router.
- Router modules. Cisco NIM and LTE modules fit only Cisco ISR routers with a matching slot.
- Fax. USB 56K modems send and receive faxes from a PC over an analogue phone line. Printer fax kits fit only the printer models they are listed for.
