SFP, SFP+, SFP28 and QSFP transceivers for switches, routers, firewalls and servers: 100M, 1G, 10G, 25G, 40G and 100G optics for multimode and single-mode fibre, BiDi single-fibre modules, copper RJ-45 SFPs and industrial-temperature models. Coded for Cisco, HPE Aruba, Juniper, Dell, Brocade and others, plus original Ubiquiti, TP-Link and LANCOM modules. From StarTech.com, BlueOptics, LevelOne, Digitus, Planet and TRENDnet.
How to choose the right SFP transceiver
- Match the port speed. SFP is 1G, SFP+ 10G, SFP28 25G, QSFP+ 40G and QSFP28 100G. Many SFP+ ports also accept 1G SFPs, but a 1G SFP port cannot take a 10G module.
- Match the fibre and distance. SX and SR modules use multimode fibre (850 nm) for runs inside a building. LX and LR modules use single-mode fibre (1310 nm) for up to 10 km; longer-reach types cover tens of kilometres. Both ends of a link need the same type.
- BiDi modules send and receive over a single fibre and are used in matched pairs with opposite wavelengths (for example 1310/1550 nm).
- Compatibility coding. Cisco, HPE, Juniper and some other switches accept only modules coded for them. Choose the version marked compatible with your switch brand. Open platforms such as Ubiquiti or TP-Link accept standard MSA modules.
- Copper SFP. RJ-45 SFP modules connect a normal network cable to an SFP port. 10G copper modules run hot and support shorter distances; check that your switch supports them.
- Short links in a rack are cheaper with DAC cables than two optics and a patch cord; see DAC cables. Industrial modules suit outdoor cabinets and high temperatures.
