Wi-Fi USB adapters that add wireless networking to a desktop PC or upgrade a laptop's Wi-Fi: tiny nano adapters, dual-band Wi-Fi 5 and Wi-Fi 6 models, high-gain adapters with external antennas, and combo Wi-Fi + Bluetooth sticks. From TP-Link, ASUS, Edimax, Netgear, D-Link, Cudy, Lanberg and LogiLink.
How to choose the right Wi-Fi USB adapter
- Use a USB 3.0 port for speed. USB 2.0 limits real-world speed to roughly 300 Mbps. For AC1200, Wi-Fi 6 and faster adapters, plug into a blue USB 3.0 port.
- Dual-band. Dual-band adapters use the 5 GHz band, which is faster and less crowded. Single-band 2.4 GHz models are fine for basic browsing and longer range.
- Nano or high-gain. Nano adapters stay in a laptop without sticking out. For a desktop far from the router, choose a high-gain model with external antennas or a USB extension cradle, and place it where it can see the router.
- Operating system. Most adapters include drivers for Windows 10 and 11. Support for Linux varies by chipset, and recent macOS versions support very few USB Wi-Fi adapters. Check the listing before ordering.
- Bluetooth. Combo adapters add Bluetooth for headsets, keyboards and mice from the same USB port.
- Device-specific adapters, such as the Yealink WF50, work only with the devices they are made for. For a desktop with a free slot, a Wi-Fi PCIe card usually gives better reception.
