QNAP TS-673A-8G — Six Bays, AMD Ryzen and Room to Grow Into 10GbE

6 bays · towerRyzen V1500B 4C/8T · 8 GB DDR42× M.2 NVMe · 2× PCIe Gen 3 x4QTS or QuTS hero

The QNAP TS-673A-8G is a six-bay desktop NAS built on an AMD Ryzen Embedded V1500B, a quad-core, eight-thread x86 processor running at 2.2 GHz with 8 GB of DDR4 memory in one of two slots. Unlike QNAP’s ARM-based units it can run virtual machines, containers and demanding applications alongside file sharing, and it can switch between the QTS and ZFS-based QuTS hero operating systems. Two M.2 NVMe slots and two full PCIe Gen 3 x4 slots leave real room for caching and faster networking later.

Compatibility — check before buying:
The unit is supplied diskless. The much-quoted 10GbE is expansion only: the ports on the back are two 2.5GbE, and a 10GbE link requires a PCIe card bought separately. There is no HDMI output on any TS-x73A model. The two M.2 slots run at PCIe Gen 3 x1 each, which suits SSD caching rather than full-speed NVMe storage, and they are not hot-swappable. Switching between QTS and QuTS hero resets the unit and erases all data, so decide which operating system you want before you load it. Memory is non-ECC, with one of the two SODIMM slots free and a 64 GB maximum.

Best For

Small business servers running VMs or containers
Design, video and CAD teams needing six bays on a desk
Virtualisation datastores that will move to 10GbE later
Offices that want a quiet NAS outside a rack room
Backup targets with SSD caching on the M.2 slots
Sites choosing ZFS with QuTS hero for data integrity

Key Features

x86 Ryzen, not ARM
Four cores and eight threads at 2.2 GHz with AES-NI encryption acceleration is a different class of machine from QNAP’s ARM units. Virtual machines, containers, database-backed applications and heavy multi-user access all become realistic on the NAS itself.

Two PCIe Gen 3 x4 slots
Two full-height slots, each with four Gen 3 lanes, are what make this unit worth buying over a sealed appliance. A 10GbE or 25GbE card, a QM2 card for extra NVMe, or a SAS expander can all be added when the need arrives, without replacing the NAS.

Two M.2 NVMe slots and heatsinks
Two M.2 2280 NVMe slots take SSDs for read or write caching or for an all-flash tier, and QNAP includes two M.2 heatsinks in the box. Both slots are Gen 3 x1, so treat them as cache and tiering rather than as full-speed storage.

Quiet enough for an office
QNAP measures the unit at 20.3 dB(A) using two 92 mm system fans and a 60 mm CPU fan. That is a machine you can share a room with, which is the real argument for a tower over a rackmount when there is no server room.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the TS-673A-8G have 10GbE?
Not on the unit itself. QNAP’s marketing mentions 10GbE because the two PCIe Gen 3 x4 slots accept a 10GbE or 25GbE card, but the ports fitted at the back are two 2.5GbE. If you need 10GbE from day one, budget for the network card alongside — tell us your switch and we will match the card to it.
Should I choose QTS or QuTS hero?
QTS is the general-purpose operating system and the easier starting point. QuTS hero uses ZFS and adds checksums, inline deduplication and compression, at the cost of wanting more memory. The important part is that switching between them wipes the NAS, so choose before you migrate data onto it.
What can I use the two M.2 slots for?
SSD caching or an all-flash tier. Each slot runs at PCIe Gen 3 x1, so a modern NVMe SSD will not reach its rated speed in them — that is fine for cache, where the gain is in access time rather than sequential throughput. QNAP includes two M.2 heatsinks in the box.
How is this different from the TS-673A-32G?
Only the memory. The 8G ships one 8 GB SODIMM with a slot free; the 32G ships 32 GB. Both cap at 64 GB using two 32 GB modules. If you plan to run several virtual machines or QuTS hero, more memory earns its keep — but it can be added later without replacing the unit.
Singular Expert Insight
This is the model to pick when the NAS has to be more than a file share. The Ryzen V1500B and the two PCIe Gen 3 x4 slots are what separate it from QNAP’s ARM units: virtual machines, containers and a later 10GbE upgrade are all on the table, and the free memory slot means 64 GB is reachable without discarding anything. Two things to keep in mind. First, 10GbE is not in the box — plan the card in. Second, the M.2 slots are Gen 3 x1, so they are cache, not a fast storage tier; the mistake is buying two expensive high-end NVMe drives for them. If you need this platform in a rack instead of on a desk, the TS-873AeU-RP is the short-depth 2U relative. See the whole range in NAS, DAS and RAID storage appliances and pick drives from our NAS hard drives.

Buyer’s Guide

Buy it if

You want a six-bay NAS that also runs virtual machines, containers or ZFS with QuTS hero, quietly and outside a rack. Two PCIe Gen 3 x4 slots, two M.2 slots and a free memory slot keep the upgrade path open.

Skip it if

You need 10GbE ports built in, an HDMI output for local display, or redundant power supplies — none of those are on this model. Skip it also if all you need is a simple file share, where an ARM unit costs less.

Also consider

The TS-673A-32G is the same NAS with 32 GB fitted. For a rack, the TS-873AeU-RP-4G is the short-depth 2U model with redundant power. For HDMI and hardware transcoding, look at the TVS-h874 or TS-864eU-RP.
