StarTech.com DVI-D Single Link Cable — 3 m, Up to 1920x1200, 4.95 Gbps, Dual Ferrites

DVI-D digital, single linkUp to 1920x12002 ferrite coresLifetime warranty

The StarTech.com DVI-D Single Link Cable, product ID DVIDSMM3M, is a 3 m male-to-male digital video cable for the enormous installed base of equipment that still uses DVI: monitors, workstations, KVM switches, industrial panels, medical displays and older graphics cards. It supports resolutions up to 1920 x 1200 at a digital transmission rate of up to 4.95 Gbps, is compliant with the DVI DDWG standard and supports hot-plugging of DVI displays. Construction is 28 AWG with aluminium-mylar foil and braided shielding plus two ferrite cores to suppress EMI, in a PVC jacket with nickel-plated connectors. StarTech.com backs it with a lifetime warranty. Typically in stock with fast delivery across Cyprus.

Compatibility — check before buying:
Two limits define this cable, and both are worth reading before ordering. First, it is single link, which caps it at 1920 x 1200 (or 1920 x 1080 at 60 Hz). Higher DVI resolutions — 2560 x 1600 on a 30-inch panel, for example — require a dual link cable, which uses additional pins this one does not carry. Second, it is DVI-D, meaning digital only: there are no analogue pins, so a passive DVI-to-VGA adapter will not work on this cable. That is the single most common DVI mistake — DVI-I ports carry analogue and DVI-D does not, and a passive adapter simply produces no picture. Converting to VGA needs an active converter. Also note that DVI carries no audio; sound needs a separate connection. Both connectors are DVI-D male with the usual thumbscrews.
Key Features

Two ferrite cores for EMI suppression
The moulded cylinders near each connector are chokes, and on a 3 m digital video run they are what keeps high-frequency noise off the cable. On DVI the symptom of interference is sparkles and dropped pixels rather than a lost picture, which is exactly the kind of fault that gets blamed on a graphics card.

Aluminium-mylar foil with braided shielding
Two shield layers over 28 AWG conductors. Combined with the ferrites, that is a properly specified digital video cable rather than a bundled one — and DVI at 1920 x 1200 over 3 m has less margin than people assume.

DVI DDWG standard compliant
Built to the Digital Display Working Group specification rather than approximately to it, which is what makes the link come up reliably across the mixed equipment DVI tends to live among: KVM switches, extenders, industrial panels and displays from four different decades.

Supports hot-plugging
You can connect and disconnect a DVI display without powering the system down, which matters at a bench, in a KVM setup or anywhere a display gets moved between machines during a working day.

Nickel-plated connectors with thumbscrews
Nickel resists corrosion at the contacts, and the thumbscrews mean a DVI connection stays put — still one of the practical advantages DVI has over HDMI in fixed installations.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a DVI-to-VGA adapter with it?
Not a passive one. DVI-D carries digital signals only — the four analogue pins that a passive adapter relies on are physically absent. Those pins exist on DVI-I connectors, which is why some DVI cables work with a cheap VGA adapter and this one cannot. Converting DVI-D to VGA requires an active converter with its own electronics.
What is the difference between single link and dual link?
The number of TMDS data channels. Single link carries one set and tops out around 1920 x 1200; dual link carries two and reaches 2560 x 1600. You can see the difference in the connector: dual link populates the middle pin block that single link leaves empty. If your display is 1080p or 1920 x 1200, single link is all you need.
Does DVI carry sound?
No. DVI is video only, which is the main reason HDMI replaced it on consumer equipment. If you are connecting a display with speakers, run audio separately over 3.5 mm, optical or USB.
Is DVI still worth using?
Where the equipment has it, yes. DVI-D is digitally identical to HDMI video, so image quality is the same, and the thumbscrews make it more secure in fixed installations. Vast numbers of monitors, KVM switches, workstations and industrial panels have DVI ports and will for years yet.
Singular Expert Insight
DVI-D is HDMI video without the audio and without the licensing, and on a monitor that has the port there is no picture-quality argument for changing anything. The two mistakes worth avoiding are both about specification rather than quality. Single link versus dual link decides your maximum resolution, and at 1920 x 1200 or below — which covers the overwhelming majority of DVI monitors still in service — single link is correct and cheaper. The DVI-D versus DVI-I distinction is the one that costs people an afternoon: DVI-D has no analogue pins, so the passive DVI-to-VGA adapter in the drawer will produce nothing at all, and only an active converter will do the job. Beyond that, look for shielding and ferrites, because 3 m of digital video is far enough for interference to show up as sparkles. Browse our PC monitors range for the displays this connects, and see our commercial monitors section for fixed-install screens.
Buyer's Guide

Buy it if

You are connecting a DVI-D display, KVM switch or workstation at up to 1920 x 1200 over 3 m and want a properly shielded cable with ferrite cores.

Skip it if

You need 2560 x 1600, which requires a dual link cable, or you intend to use a passive DVI-to-VGA adapter — impossible on DVI-D. Also skip it if you need audio on the same cable.

Also consider

DVI-D dual link cables for resolutions above 1920 x 1200, DVI to HDMI cables for connecting DVI sources to HDMI displays, or active DVI to VGA converters for analogue displays.
