The Cisco SFP-10G-LR= is a 10 Gbit SFP+ transceiver for single-mode fibre, reaching up to 10 km over a duplex LC connection. It is Cisco’s standard long-reach 10G optic for uplinks between buildings, floors and sites on Cisco switches and routers. It supports digital optical monitoring; Cisco’s data sheet flags the lack of FCoE only on the S-class sibling. In practice, single-mode optics are the choice when a link leaves the building or runs several hundred metres: the OS2 fibre used by carriers and campus backbones carries the signal for kilometres with little loss. Before you order, confirm the fibre is single-mode at both ends and note the length and the number of patch panels on the way.
Compatibility — check before buying:
It is 10G only — as an SFP+ module it will not bring up a 1G link. It needs single-mode fibre; for multimode runs choose SFP-10G-SR. Cisco’s SFP-10G-LR-S has the same reach but does not support FCoE, and the SFP-10G-LR-X covers an extended −5 to 85 °C range. Keep the dust cap on until you connect the fibre, and clean both connector ends before every mating — dirt is the most common cause of a link that will not come up. Not sure? Standard, not S-class
Cisco notes that the S-class SFP-10G-LR-S does not support FCoE. This is the standard version, which is the one to choose for converged storage networks.
Single-mode fibre, long reach
Built for single-mode (OS1/OS2) fibre, the type used between buildings, floors and sites. It will not run over the orange or aqua multimode fibre found in many racks — the fibre type has to match at both ends.
Monitoring you can read
Digital diagnostics (SFF-8472) let the switch report temperature, laser power and received light, so a dirty connector or a failing link shows up in the switch before users call.
Hot-swappable
Modules plug into a live port without shutting the switch down, so a link can be added or replaced during working hours. Seat it until it clicks and use the latch to remove it.
