The Cisco DS-SFP-FC16G-SW= is the spare-order version of a shortwave Fibre Channel SFP+ optical transceiver. It fits a supported port in a Cisco MDS 9000 Series storage network and converts the port’s electrical signal into an 850nm optical link over multimode fibre. You need compatible host equipment, duplex-LC multimode cabling and a matching supported optical endpoint. The spare module does not provide a complete link by itself.
Before you order:
This is Fibre Channel storage networking. The SFP+ shape alone does not establish Ethernet compatibility. Check the exact switch/module, port speed, software support, fibre grade and link budget before ordering.
What It Means in Practice
- For a supported 16G storage-network link, insert the transceiver in the supported host port and connect duplex LC multimode fibre to the compatible remote optic. At 16G, Cisco specifies up to 100m on OM3 or 125m on OM4/OM5, with a minimum fibre length of 2m.
- Distance depends on both the negotiated rate and fibre grade. The longer distances listed at 4G do not apply to 16G; check the full speed-specific table.
What Will Not Work
- Do not treat this as a generic 10GbE Ethernet optic or a single-mode longwave module.
- Do not assume 300m or 400m reach at 16G from an unqualified retailer distance claim.
- An empty SFP+ slot is not sufficient evidence of compatibility; host support must be confirmed.

850nm multimode optics
