Extenders that carry HDMI, VGA, USB and audio further than a normal cable — to a projector across the meeting room, a screen on another floor or a display wall in a shop. Over Cat6, HDBaseT, IP network, fibre or wireless, plus KVM extenders and HDMI signal boosters, from Lindy, Digitus, StarTech.com, LevelOne and other brands.
Which extender do I need?
- Signal booster / repeater — a small inline unit that extends an HDMI cable run (about 15–40 m in total). The simplest fix when a long HDMI cable is just too long.
- HDMI over Cat6 — a transmitter and receiver joined by one network cable: typically up to 40–70 m. Use a solid Cat6 or Cat6A cable run directly between the two units, without a network switch in between.
- HDBaseT — the professional version: 4K up to about 70 m (1080p up to 100 m) and can also carry IR remote control, RS-232 and power to the receiver.
- HDMI over IP — works through your network switch, so one source can reach many screens and distances are not limited to one cable. Needs a suitable managed switch for multi-screen setups.
- Fibre — for hundreds of metres or more, or where electrical interference is a problem. Wireless — no cable at all, for shorter distances in the same space.
KVM extenders also carry USB keyboard and mouse, so you can work on a computer that sits in another room. Check that the extender supports the resolution you need (4K at 60 Hz or 1080p) and whether it is a complete set or only a transmitter or receiver.
