Tower and rack servers for small offices, growing companies and data centres: file and print, Active Directory, virtualisation, databases, ERP and backup. HPE ProLiant, Fujitsu PRIMERGY and ASUS server barebones, from entry single-socket models to dual-socket 1U and 2U rack servers.
How to choose the right server
- Tower or rack. Tower servers (such as HPE ML30, ML110 and MicroServer) suit offices without a rack. Rack servers mount in a 19" cabinet: 1U saves space, 2U adds drive bays and expansion slots. Check your rack depth and that rails are included.
- Size it to the workload. File sharing, printing and Active Directory for a small office run well on an entry single-socket server. Virtualisation, databases and ERP need more cores and memory, as in the HPE DL360 / DL380 and Fujitsu RX2530 / RX2540.
- Check what is included. Many servers ship with one processor, basic memory and no drives. Plan for drives, extra memory, a second power supply and rails. HPE "Network Choice" models come without a network adapter, so one must be added.
- Drives and RAID. SFF (2.5") bays suit SSDs and fast SAS drives; LFF (3.5") bays suit large-capacity storage. Hot-swap bays and a RAID controller protect against a drive failure.
- Barebones (ASUS RS series) come without processor, memory, storage or operating system, for teams that build their own configuration.
- Licensing. Windows Server is licensed by CPU cores, plus client access licences (CALs) for users or devices. Include this in the budget.
- Remote management. HPE iLO and Fujitsu iRMC let IT monitor and restart the server remotely. Add a UPS to protect it from power cuts.
