AMD processors for office PCs, gaming builds and workstations: Ryzen 9000, 8000 and 7000 series for the AM5 platform with DDR5, Ryzen 5000 for AM4 upgrades and budget builds, Ryzen X3D models with 3D V-Cache for gaming, Ryzen Threadripper for heavy workstations, and Athlon for basic PCs.
How to choose an AMD processor
- Platform. Ryzen 7000, 8000 and 9000 need an AM5 board and DDR5. Ryzen 5000 and Athlon use AM4 and DDR4.
- Graphics. Ryzen 8000G and most Ryzen 7000/9000 have basic integrated graphics; models ending in F, and Ryzen 5000 without G, need a graphics card.
- Class. Ryzen 5 suits office and mainstream gaming, Ryzen 7 suits creators and developers, Ryzen 9 and Threadripper suit rendering and virtualisation. X3D models are the fastest for gaming.
- Boxed or tray. Some boxed CPUs include a Wraith cooler; tray and many high-end boxed CPUs need a separate cooler.
