How to choose a controller card
- Slot. Check the free slot on the motherboard: PCIe x1, x4, x8 or x16, and whether the PC needs a low-profile bracket (small form factor desktops and 2U servers).
- RAID. Hardware RAID controllers protect data across several drives (RAID 1, 5, 6, 10). Check the supported drives (SATA, SAS, NVMe), the number of ports, the cables and whether a battery or flash backup module is needed.
- Serial and parallel. RS-232 cards connect scales, cash drawers, barcode scanners, machines and older printers. Check the number of ports and the operating system driver.
- USB cards. Add USB 3.0 or USB-C ports to older PCs; some cards need a SATA or Molex power connector.
