How to choose an Intel motherboard
- Socket first. Core Ultra 200 (Arrow Lake) needs LGA1851. 12th, 13th and 14th gen Core need LGA1700. The two are not compatible.
- Chipset. Z boards support CPU overclocking and have the most PCIe and M.2 lanes; B boards suit most business and gaming builds; H boards are the budget choice for office PCs.
- Memory. LGA1851 boards use DDR5. LGA1700 boards come in DDR5 or DDR4 versions; check the model name (D4 or DDR4) and buy matching memory.
- BIOS. A 14th gen CPU on an early LGA1700 board may need a BIOS update first.
