Alcatel S280 — simple DECT cordless phone with handsfree and call blocking
DECT cordlessHandsfreeCall block 50 numbersUp to 4 handsets
The Alcatel S280 is a single-handset DECT cordless phone for a home line or a small office desk: a black handset with a two-line amber backlit display, a compact charging base, handsfree speaker and a dedicated key for blocking unwanted callers. It is built for people who want a phone that rings, shows the caller and is easy to use — not a smart device.
It connects to an ordinary analogue telephone line. In Cyprus that means a classic copper line or the analogue phone port (often labelled Phone, TEL or FXS) on your fibre or VDSL router. The base sits wherever there is a phone socket or router port and a mains outlet; the handset works up to around 50 m indoors from it.
Before you order: The S280 needs an analogue phone line or the analogue phone port of your router. It does not plug into a computer network (RJ45) and is not an IP/SIP phone. Caller name and number display depends on the Caller ID service of your line provider.
What's in the Box
- Alcatel S280 handset (black)
- Charging base with mains power adapter
- Telephone line cord
- 2 × AAA NiMH rechargeable batteries (300 mAh), installed in the handset
- The manufacturer does not itemise the rest of the pack; the power adapter of this continental-Europe edition may need a plug adapter for UK-style (BS 1363) sockets used in Cyprus
What It Means in Practice
- The display shows two lines — a dot-matrix text line and a seven-segment number line — with an amber backlight that is readable in a dim hallway or at night.
- Press the call-block key during or after a call to stop that number ringing again; up to 50 numbers can be stored and calls with a withheld (anonymous) number are rejected by default.
- The 50-entry phonebook and the 20-call log (with date and time when your operator sends it) are shared between handsets if you add more S280 handsets later.
- Handsfree lets you put the handset down on the desk and talk while you look up a document, with 5 volume steps.
- ECO mode reduces power consumption while the handset sits on the base and stops charging once the battery is sufficiently charged.
What Will Not Work
- It will not connect to an Ethernet port, Wi-Fi or a VoIP account — for IP telephony choose a SIP DECT system instead.
- There is no answering machine; missed calls appear only in the call log (or in your operator voicemail if you subscribe to it).
- It will not work during a power cut: the base needs mains power to run the DECT radio.
- The single-handset box contains one handset only — extra handsets for other rooms are sold separately.
- There is no Bluetooth, mobile-phone pairing or headset jack.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will the S280 work with my fibre internet connection?
Yes, if your router has an analogue phone port (Phone/TEL/FXS) that your provider has activated for voice. Plug the base line cord into that port instead of a wall socket.
Can I add a second handset later?
Yes. The base supports up to 4 handsets; register additional S280 handsets to share the phonebook and use internal calls and transfer.
Does it block calls from hidden numbers?
Yes — anonymous (withheld) calls are rejected by default, and you can block up to 50 specific numbers with the call-block key.
Does it show who is calling?
It shows the number, and the name when it matches your phonebook or your line provider sends it. Caller ID must be active on your line.
Singular Expert Insight · Buyer's Guide
The S280 is the entry phone of the Alcatel range: a reliable DECT handset with the features most people use daily — a readable display, handsfree and a proper call-block key. If you need recorded messages, look at the F860 Voice or F890 Voice; if your office is moving to IP telephony, check our
VoIP accessories and SIP phones instead of an analogue cordless.
✓ Buy it if you want a straightforward cordless phone for an analogue line or your router phone port, with call blocking and handsfree.
✕ Skip it if you need an answering machine, an IP/SIP phone, or a phone that keeps working during a power cut.
→ Also consider Alcatel F860 Voice (answering machine, 100 contacts) or the F890 Voice for a larger display and advanced call blocking.
