APC Replacement Battery Cartridge #31 — 48 V 9 Ah lead-acid battery for Smart-UPS RT 1000/2000 On-Line
Genuine APC RBC48 V 9 AhFully assembledFor Smart-UPS RT 1000/2000
The APC Replacement Battery Cartridge #31 (RBC31) is a genuine 48 V 9 Ah lead-acid battery cartridge for the APC Smart-UPS RT 1000 and 2000 VA on-line UPS (SURT1000XLI, SURT2000XLI, SURT1000XLIM) and the SURT48XLBP / SURT48RMXLBP battery packs, supplied fully assembled with every connector it needs, so a UPS whose original battery has worn out can be brought back to its rated runtime without rewiring individual blocks.
APC describes its RBCs as tested and certified for compatibility with the specific APC UPS they are listed for, with a lifetime of three to five years. In practice that means one thing for you: the cartridge number must match your UPS. APC lists RBC31 for SURT1000XLI, SURT2000XLI, SURT1000XLIM, SURT48XLBP battery pack, SURT48RMXLBP battery pack.
Before you order: Check the model on the rating label of your UPS (usually underneath or at the back) against the list above. If your model is not listed, do not assume a similar-looking cartridge fits — send us the model and we will confirm the correct RBC before you order.
What's in the Box
- 1 × APC Replacement Battery Cartridge #31 (RBC31), 48 V 9 Ah lead-acid, 1 interconnect cable fitted
- All required connectors
- Battery recycling guide
What It Means in Practice
- RBC31 is a long 48 V cartridge (419 mm deep, 11.23 kg) that slides into the Smart-UPS RT battery bay; one cartridge replaces the internal battery of the listed UPS.
- APC also lists RBC31 for the SURT48XLBP and SURT48RMXLBP external battery packs — if you are renewing a pack as well as the UPS, tell us and we will confirm how many cartridges you need.
- Fit it, then let the UPS charge the new battery fully before you rely on the runtime or run a self-test.
- The used battery is still hazardous waste: pack it in the box the new one came in and recycle it as the included guide describes — never put lead-acid batteries in household waste.
What Will Not Work
- It will not fit APC UPS models that APC does not list for RBC31, even if the voltage looks the same — size, connector and cartridge layout differ between RBC numbers.
- It is not a universal battery for other brands of UPS.
- It will not give more runtime than your UPS delivered when new; for longer runtime you need a larger UPS or a model that supports external battery packs.
- It will not fix a UPS whose electronics have failed — if the UPS still reports a fault with a new battery, the unit itself needs service.
- Line-interactive Smart-UPS (SMT/SMC) and Smart-UPS X models use different cartridges, such as RBC7 or APCRBC116.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know my UPS battery needs replacing?
Most APC UPS models show a replace-battery indicator, alarm or failed self-test when the battery can no longer hold its charge. APC rates RBC lifetime at three to five years; high room temperature shortens it.
Can I fit a cheaper generic battery instead?
Generic blocks may match voltage and capacity, but they arrive loose: you would have to transfer connectors and brackets yourself. RBC31 arrives as a complete APC cartridge that matches the listed UPS models.
How much runtime will I get?
Runtime depends on your UPS model and the load connected to it, so APC does not publish a runtime for the cartridge itself. A new genuine RBC restores the runtime your UPS model is specified for.
Is RBC31 for the Smart-UPS RT only?
APC lists it for the Smart-UPS RT 1000/2000 on-line models and their SURT48 battery packs. It is not listed for the line-interactive Smart-UPS ranges.
Singular Expert Insight · Buyer's Guide
RBC31 serves the double-conversion Smart-UPS RT 1000/2000 and its matching external packs. On-line UPS often protect equipment that cannot tolerate a transfer gap, so replace the cartridge on schedule rather than after a failure. Browse all
UPS replacement batteries if you need a different cartridge number.
✓ Buy it if you run a SURT1000XLI, SURT2000XLI or SURT1000XLIM, or a SURT48XLBP / SURT48RMXLBP pack, with worn-out batteries.
✕ Skip it if your UPS is a line-interactive Smart-UPS or a Smart-UPS X.
→ Also consider APCRBC116 for the Smart-UPS X SMX750I/SMX1000I; RBC7 for the SMT1500I.
