Inter-Tech GD-MS013 — tool-less M.2 NVMe enclosure, USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C
USB 3.2 Gen 2 · 10 GbpsM.2 NVMe · Key M / B+M2230 / 2242 / 2260 / 2280Aluminium · bus-powered
The Inter-Tech GD-MS013 is a tool-less external enclosure that turns one M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD into a portable USB-C drive running at up to 10 Gbps (USB 3.2 Gen 2). It suits anyone reusing an SSD left over from a laptop or desktop upgrade, or anyone who wants a fast pocket drive for backups, photo libraries and project files.
The housing is aluminium with plastic end caps, measures 113 x 37 x 12 mm and weighs about 45 g. It accepts M.2 cards with Key M or Key B+M in lengths 2230, 2242, 2260 and 2280, takes its power from the USB port and shows power and drive activity on LEDs. Inter-Tech lists support for Windows, macOS and Linux.
Before you order: Inter-Tech publishes support for M.2 PCIe NVMe SSDs only. M.2 SATA SSDs are not listed as supported, so check whether your drive is NVMe or SATA before you order.
What's in the Box
- GD-MS013 enclosure (no SSD included)
- USB 3.2 Type-C cable, 30 cm
- Transport bag
- User manual
What It Means in Practice
- An NVMe SSD is far faster internally than any USB link, so in this enclosure the USB 3.2 Gen 2 connection (10 Gbps) sets the ceiling. That is still the speed class of a fast external SSD and many times quicker than a USB hard drive.
- On a USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5 Gbps) or USB 2.0 port the enclosure still works, at the lower speed of that port.
- No power adapter is needed: one cable carries both data and power, which makes it practical for laptops and travel.
- A brand-new SSD must be initialised and formatted (Windows Disk Management, macOS Disk Utility or Linux tools) before it shows up as a drive; a used SSD keeps its existing partitions and data.
- The short 30 cm cable keeps the drive close to the laptop; for a desktop under a desk you may want a longer USB-C cable.
What Will Not Work
- M.2 SATA SSDs — Inter-Tech lists NVMe drives only.
- 22110-length M.2 drives — the bay ends at 2280.
- mSATA, 2.5" SATA or U.2 drives.
- Full internal NVMe speed — the 10 Gbps USB link limits throughput.
- Two SSDs at once — it holds a single drive.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is an SSD included?
No. The GD-MS013 is sold empty; you fit your own M.2 NVMe SSD.
Will it work on a computer with only USB-A ports?
The enclosure has a USB-C port and ships with a Type-C cable. On a USB-A-only computer you need a suitable USB-C to USB-A cable or adapter, and the speed then depends on that port.
Will a 2230 SSD from a handheld or a Surface fit?
Yes — 2230 is one of the four published lengths, as long as the drive is NVMe.
Singular Expert Insight · Buyer's Guide
A compact, tool-less way to give a spare NVMe SSD a second life as a fast portable drive. The 10 Gbps USB link is the real limit, not the SSD, so a mid-range NVMe drive is enough to reach full speed. If you still need the drive itself, browse our
internal SSDs.
✓ Buy it if you have, or plan to buy, an M.2 NVMe SSD and want a light USB-C drive at up to 10 Gbps.
✕ Skip it if your SSD is an M.2 SATA model, or you need more than 10 Gbps (USB4 / Thunderbolt enclosures).
→ Also consider a ready-made drive from our External SSDs range if you do not already own an M.2 SSD.
