The BIXOLON XD5-40t (XD5-40TEBK/BEG) is a 4-inch thermal transfer desktop label printer for retail, logistics, healthcare and manufacturing that print barcode, shipping and product labels.
It prints at 203 dpi up to 108 mm wide and 152 mm per second, takes ribbons up to 300 m on 1-inch or ½-inch cores, and in this configuration connects over USB, USB host, Ethernet and RS-232 serial. BPL-Z (ZPL II) and BPL-E (EPL) emulations let it replace Zebra printers without new label formats.
Before you order: Two ribbons and core paper are included to get started; order more labels and ribbons with the printer.

What It Means in Practice
- Ribbon flexibility: it takes both 300 m ribbons on 1-inch cores and shorter ribbons on ½-inch cores — wax, wax/resin or resin.
- Media: labels 15–118 mm wide, 0.06–0.20 mm thick, on rolls up to 127 mm diameter (25.4–38.1 mm core); gap, black-mark, notch, continuous or fan-fold.
- Speed: up to 152 mm/s (6 ips) at 203 dpi, with labels up to 1,000 mm long.
- Drop-in replacement: SLCS, BPL-Z (ZPL II) and BPL-E (EPL) run existing Zebra and Eltron label formats.
- Connectivity: USB and USB host plus Ethernet and RS-232 serial in this configuration share the printer across the office or connect to legacy systems.
- Energy: ENERGY STAR certified with an external 100–240 V adapter.
What Will Not Work
- Wi-Fi or Bluetooth: not in this configuration; available in other XD5-40 interface versions.
- Cutting or peeling: tear-off as supplied; cutter and peeler are options.
- Very small print: 203 dpi only — choose the 300 dpi XD5-43t for tiny text.
- Wide labels: maximum print width is 108 mm.
