The Cisco GLC-ZX-SMD= is a long-haul Gigabit SFP transceiver for single-mode fibre, reaching approximately 70 km depending on link loss. It transmits at 1550 nm with a 21 dB link budget and supports digital optical monitoring. It is used for inter-city, carrier and utility links on Cisco switches and routers, and is rated for an extended −5 to 85 °C range. In practice, single-mode optics are the choice when a link leaves the building or runs several hundred metres: the OS2 fibre used by carriers and campus backbones carries the signal for kilometres with little loss. Before you order, confirm the fibre is single-mode at both ends and note the length and the number of patch panels on the way.
Compatibility — check before buying:
This is a high-power optic. Cisco states that when the fibre span loss is less than 8 dB, a 10 dB inline attenuator must be fitted before the receiving port at each end — otherwise the receiver can be overloaded. The attenuators are not included. Both ends need a ZX module; a 10 km LX optic will not reach this distance. Keep the dust cap on until you connect the fibre, and clean both connector ends before every mating — dirt is the most common cause of a link that will not come up. Not sure?
