The Cisco QSFP-100G-DR-S= is a 100GBASE-DR QSFP28 transceiver that carries 100 Gbps on one wavelength over a duplex LC single-mode pair, up to 500 m. It is designed for data-centre links, and Cisco states it interoperates with 400GBASE-DR4 modules such as the QSFP-400G-DR4-S through fibre breakout cables — so a 400G spine can feed four 100G leaf switches. In practice, single-mode optics are the choice when a link leaves the building or runs several hundred metres: the OS2 fibre used by carriers and campus backbones carries the signal for kilometres with little loss. Before you order, confirm the fibre is single-mode at both ends and note the length and the number of patch panels on the way.

Compatibility — check before buying:
Reach is 500 m. It will not link to LR4, CWDM4 or SM-SR modules — the far end must be DR, or a 400G-DR4 lane via breakout. For longer single-mode runs the QSFP-100G-FR-S= uses the same connector and wavelength but reaches 2 km. Cisco marks this module with an orange pull tab. Keep the dust cap on until you connect the fibre, and clean both connector ends before every mating — dirt is the most common cause of a link that will not come up. Not sure? Can it connect to a 400G port?
Yes, to one lane of a 400GBASE-DR4 module such as Cisco’s QSFP-400G-DR4-S, through a fibre breakout cable. Cisco states this interoperability in its data sheet.
DR or FR — which do I need?
Both use one wavelength on duplex LC. DR reaches 500 m, FR reaches 2 km. For runs inside one data hall DR is enough.
Are fibre patch cords included?
No. You get 1 module. The Duplex LC patch cord, a matching module for the far end of the link and a fibre cleaning tool are bought separately. Tell us the distance and the fibre type and we quote the right cord.
Will it work in a switch from another brand?
Cisco modules carry Cisco Quality ID coding, and Cisco’s installation notes say to use only Cisco transceivers in Cisco devices. Support is confirmed per host model and software release in the Cisco TMG matrix. Cisco does not publish operation in other brands’ switches, so we do not promise it — send us the model and we check it.
