Cisco 100GBASE QSFP Active Optical Cable — 3m
100G AOC3m fixed lengthQSFP28 ↔ QSFP28Cisco original
The Cisco 100GBASE QSFP Active Optical Cable (3m) is a ready-made 100 Gigabit link: two QSFP28 transceivers permanently joined by a thin optical cable, for connecting two Cisco switches, routers or servers inside a rack or between neighbouring racks.
You plug one end into a 100G QSFP port on each device and the link comes up — there are no separate optics to buy, no fibre patch cords to clean and no polarity to get wrong. Compared with a copper direct-attach cable of the same length, the AOC is much thinner and lighter, which matters when you are dressing dozens of high-speed links through a crowded cable manager.
Before you order: This is a Cisco-coded original part. Before ordering, check your exact switch or router model and software release against the Cisco Transceiver Module Group (TMG) compatibility matrix — or send us the model and we will check it for you.
What's in the Box
- 1 × Cisco 100GBASE QSFP active optical cable, 3m, with a QSFP28 transceiver fixed on each end
- Pull tab colour on this length: orange (Cisco uses the colour to identify the length)
What It Means in Practice
- One cable = one 100G port-to-port link. It replaces two 100G optics plus a fibre patch cord for short runs.
- The length is fixed at 3m. Measure the real path through your cable managers, not the straight-line distance, before choosing a length.
- Because the optics are sealed inside the cable ends, there are no exposed fibre connectors to contaminate — a frequent cause of flaky links with separate transceivers.
- The thin 3.5 mm cable keeps airflow free at the front of dense 100G switches.
What Will Not Work
- It will not work as a 4×25G breakout — it is a straight QSFP-to-QSFP 100G cable. For breakout you need a different (splitter) cable.
- It cannot be cut, extended or re-terminated. If the run turns out longer than 3m, you need a longer cable or separate optics with structured fibre.
- It will not connect to SFP+/SFP28 ports or to 40G-only QSFP+ ports.
- Third-party (non-Cisco) switches may reject or warn about Cisco-coded optics; this cable is intended for Cisco hosts.
Key Features
Plug-and-play 100G
Transceivers and fibre are one assembly — no optics pairing, no patch cords, no polarity mistakes.
Thin and light
At 3.5 mm diameter it is far easier to route than a copper DAC, especially in dense top-of-rack and spine switches.
Cisco original
Genuine Cisco spare (part number ending in =), so it is recognised by Cisco platforms that are listed for it in the TMG matrix.
Length identified by colour
Each length has its own pull-tab colour (orange on 3m), which makes tracing links in a busy rack quicker.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this the same as a DAC cable?
It does the same job (a fixed-length cable with modules on both ends), but uses optical fibre instead of copper, so it is thinner and lighter. Cisco calls the copper versions DAC and the optical versions AOC.
Do I need to buy transceivers separately?
No. The two QSFP28 transceivers are part of the cable. You only need free 100G QSFP ports on both devices.
Can I use it between a Cisco switch and a server NIC?
Only if the NIC accepts Cisco-coded optics. Tell us the NIC model and we will check before you order.
Singular Expert Insight · Buyer's Guide
For 100G runs inside a rack or to the next rack, an AOC is the cleanest option: one part number, nothing to clean, and far less bulk than copper. Pick the length from the real cable path — 3m is the total length end to end. If you are building the switching layer too, see our
switches.
✓ Buy it if you need a fixed 100G link of about 3m between Cisco devices listed for this cable.
✕ Skip it if you need 4×25G breakout, a longer or variable run through patch panels, or a non-Cisco host that refuses Cisco optics.
→ Also consider Cisco 100G AOC in other lengths (3 m, 10 m, 15 m), or separate 100G QSFP28 optics with structured fibre for longer runs.
Not sure your switch accepts it? Send us the switch model and software version and we will check the Cisco compatibility matrix before you order.
