Cisco SFP-10G-AOC5M= — 10G Active Optical Cable, 5 m
10 GbpsSFP+ both ends5 m1 W
The Cisco SFP-10G-AOC5M= is a 5 m 10GBASE active optical cable: a fibre cable with a 10G SFP+ module permanently fitted at each end. The “=” suffix is Cisco’s spare part, ordered separately from a switch. It links two 10G SFP+ ports on Cisco switches, routers or servers across a rack or to the next rack, drawing 1 W and rated for 0 to 70 °C. In practice, an active optical cable is the tidy way to join two 10G switches or a switch and a server in the same or the next rack: one part number, nothing to clean, and a thin cable that routes easily. Its length is fixed, so measure the route between the two ports, including cable management, before you choose.
Compatibility — check before buying:
Cisco lists the AOC cables for 10 Gigabit Ethernet only and does not publish 1G operation, so it is not for 1G-only SFP ports. The length is fixed at 5 m — it cannot be shortened or re-terminated, so measure the route first. Other lengths exist (1, 2, 3, 7 and 10 m). Copper twinax DACs do the same job at short lengths; both ends of an AOC must plug into SFP+ ports that accept Cisco coding. Not sure? Send us your switch model and the cable run and we check it before you order.
Best For
✓ 10G switch-to-switch links in one rack
✓ Switch-to-server 10G links
✓ Tidy cabling in dense racks
✓ Avoiding separate optics and patch cords
✓ Links where a copper DAC is too thick
✓ Cisco Nexus and Catalyst SFP+ ports
Key Features
One part, one link
Both SFP+ ends are part of the cable, so there is nothing to pair, clean or order separately — plug in both ends and the link comes up.
Fibre cable with the optics built in
An active optical cable has an SFP+ end fixed to each side of a fibre cable, so there are no separate transceivers to buy, match or clean. It is lighter and thinner than a copper DAC of the same length.
Hot-swappable
Modules plug into a live port without shutting the switch down, so a link can be added or replaced during working hours. Seat it until it clicks and use the latch to remove it.
Plan both ends together
A link only comes up when both ends use the same standard, speed and media. Order the far-end part, the cabling and any spares in one go and the link works on day one.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will it run at 1G?
Cisco lists the AOC cables under 10 Gigabit Ethernet and does not publish 1G operation, so we do not promise it. Use it between 10G SFP+ ports.
AOC or copper DAC — which should I choose?
Both join two SFP+ ports directly. Cisco offers passive twinax DACs up to 5 m and active ones at 7 and 10 m. An AOC is lighter and thinner, which helps in dense racks; a DAC is usually cheaper at short lengths.
Is anything else needed to make the link?
No transceivers or patch cords are needed — the SFP+ ends are part of the cable. You need a free 10G SFP+ port at each end that accepts the cable.
Will it work in a switch from another brand?
Cisco modules carry Cisco Quality ID coding, and Cisco’s installation notes say to use only Cisco transceivers in Cisco devices. Cisco does not publish operation in other brands’ switches, so we do not promise it — send us the model and we check it.
Singular Expert Insight
We suggest an AOC where cable bulk matters or the run is at the edge of passive DAC length. Measure the route including cable management before choosing the length — a 5 m AOC cannot be shortened. For links longer than 10 m, a pair of SR optics and an LC patch cord is the flexible option. Every order is backed by Singular’s local support in Cyprus — if a link will not come up, send us the port status from the switch and we help you find out whether it is the optic, the cable or the configuration. Buyer’s Guide
Buy it if
You need a 5 m 10G link between two Cisco SFP+ ports and want a thin, single-part cable.
Skip it if
Your ports are 1G-only, the route is longer than 5 m, or you prefer the lower cost of a copper DAC.
