Cisco 25GBASE SFP28 Active Optical Cable — 5m
25G AOC5m fixed lengthSFP28 ↔ SFP28Cisco original
The Cisco 25GBASE Active Optical Cable (5m) is a ready-made 25G link: two SFP28 transceivers permanently joined by optical fibre, for connecting two Cisco switches, routers or servers inside a rack or to an adjacent rack.
Plug one end into a 25G SFP28 port on each device and the link comes up — no separate optics to buy, no fibre patch cords to clean and no polarity to get wrong. It is thinner and lighter than a copper direct-attach cable, which helps when many links share the same cable manager. The host ports must have BASE-R FEC or RS-FEC enabled — Cisco states this as a requirement for 25G AOCs.
Before you order: Cisco-coded original part. Check your exact device model and software release in the Cisco TMG compatibility matrix before ordering — or send us the model and we will check it for you.
What's in the Box
- 1 × Cisco 25GBASE active optical cable, 5m, with a SFP28 transceiver fixed on each end
- Pull tab colour: grey
What It Means in Practice
- One cable = one 25G port-to-port link. It replaces two 25G optics plus a fibre patch cord on short runs.
- The length is fixed at 5m. Measure the real path through the cable managers, not the straight-line distance.
- The optics are sealed inside the cable ends, so there are no exposed fibre end-faces to contaminate.
- Pull-tab colours identify the length, which makes tracing links in a busy rack easier.
What Will Not Work
- It is a straight point-to-point cable — no breakout to several lower-speed ports.
- It cannot be cut, extended or re-terminated; for a longer or variable run use separate optics with structured fibre.
- It will not fit QSFP ports, and it will not run at 25G in SFP+ (10G-only) ports.
- Third-party (non-Cisco) hosts may reject or warn about Cisco-coded optics; this cable is intended for Cisco devices.
Key Features
Plug-and-play 25G
Transceivers and fibre are one assembly — no optics pairing, no patch cords, no polarity mistakes.
Light and flexible
Much less bulk than copper DAC, so airflow at the switch front stays clear.
Cisco original
Genuine Cisco spare (part number ending in =) for the Cisco platforms listed for it in the TMG matrix.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to buy transceivers separately?
No. Both SFP28 transceivers are part of the cable; you only need a free 25G SFP28 port on each device.
AOC or DAC — which should I choose?
Both are fixed-length cables with modules on the ends. The AOC uses fibre, so it is thinner and lighter; copper DAC is heavier but needs no optics. For dense racks the AOC is easier to manage.
Will it work in a server NIC?
Only if the NIC accepts Cisco-coded optics. Tell us the NIC model and we will check before you order.
Singular Expert Insight · Buyer's Guide
For short 25G runs between Cisco devices, an AOC is the tidiest choice: one part number, nothing to clean and far less bulk than copper. Choose the length from the real cable path. If you are planning the switching layer as well, see our
switches.
✓ Buy it if you need a fixed 25G link of about 5m between Cisco devices listed for this cable.
✕ Skip it if you need breakout, a longer run through patch panels, or a non-Cisco host that refuses Cisco optics.
→ Also consider The same Cisco AOC in other lengths, or separate SFP28 optics with structured fibre for longer runs.
