Close the stack ring on tall or split Catalyst 9300 stacks with Cisco's 3 m StackWise cable

The Cisco STACK-T1-3M is a 3-metre StackWise-480/1T data stacking cable that connects the rear stack ports of Cisco Catalyst 9300, Catalyst 9300X and Catalyst 3850 switches, for network teams building or extending a switch stack that spans more than a few rack units.
Short 0.5 m and 1 m cables are fine for linking neighbouring switches, but the cable that runs from the bottom switch back to the top one to close the ring has to cover the full height of the stack. That return cable is where the 3 m version earns its place, and it is also the length to choose when stack members sit in two adjacent racks rather than one above the other. Because it is the same Type 1 cable Cisco lists for the Catalyst 3850, one spare on the shelf covers both the Catalyst 3850 stacks still in service and the new Catalyst 9300 stacks replacing them, which keeps spares simple during a phased migration across several wiring closets.
Before you order: This is a Type 1 (STACK-T1) cable for modular-uplink Catalyst 9300 (C9300), Catalyst 9300X (C9300X) and Catalyst 3850 switches. Fixed-uplink Catalyst 9300L and 9300LM models use StackWise-320 with STACK-T3 or STACK-T3A cables and a stack adapter kit, so do not order this cable for a 9300L stack.
What's in the Box
- 1 x Cisco StackWise-480/1T stacking cable, 3 m (STACK-T1-3M), with a Type 1 stack connector at each end
What It Means in Practice
- Use it as the long return cable that closes the stack ring, so the stack keeps running if any single cable or switch drops out.
- A closed ring gives the stack its full stacking bandwidth; an open chain works but runs at half bandwidth and has no cable redundancy.
- Lets you split a stack across two neighbouring racks or leave space between switches for patch panels and cable managers.
- The connector is held in by captive screws: finger-tighten them with the Cisco logo facing up, and do not over-tighten.
- Cisco rates the stack cable for up to 200 insertions and removals, so reworking the stack during installation is not a concern.
- Coil any slack no tighter than about 182 mm in diameter to stay within Cisco's minimum coiled-diameter limit for the 3 m cable.
- Route the long return cable along the rear of the rack, away from fans and power supplies, and label both ends so nobody unplugs it by mistake during later maintenance.
- Before cabling, confirm every stack member runs a compatible software release; the cable connects the switches physically, but the stack only forms when the software allows it.
What Will Not Work
- Catalyst 9300L and 9300LM (fixed uplinks): they use StackWise-320 cables (STACK-T3 / STACK-T3A) with a C9300L stack adapter, not this cable.
- Catalyst 9200 / 9200L and Catalyst 2960-X series: different stacking systems and connectors.
- StackPower: this is a data stacking cable only; power stacking uses separate StackPower cables and ports.
- Mixing modular and fixed-uplink 9300 switches in one stack is not supported by Cisco, whichever cable you use.
- Higher-scale C9300-24UB, C9300-24UXB and C9300-48UB models only stack with other higher-scale models; the cable does not change that rule.
Key Features
One cable for three switch families
Cisco lists the same STACK-T1 cable for the Catalyst 3850 and for both the C9300 and C9300X families, so one spare covers a mixed estate during a phased refresh.
StackWise-480 and StackWise-1T
On C9300 switches the stack runs at 480 Gbps; on C9300X switches the same cable carries StackWise-1T. When C9300X and C9300 members share a stack, Cisco runs it at StackWise-480 speed.
Screw-retained connector
Captive screws hold the connector firmly in the rear stack port, so a cable that gets brushed during rack work stays seated instead of silently splitting the stack.
Halogen-free jacket
Cisco specifies its stack cables as halogen-free, which suits data rooms and enclosures with low-smoke cabling policies.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do my new Catalyst 9300 switches already include a stacking cable?
When a C9300 is ordered with a stacking option and no length is chosen, Cisco supplies a 0.5 m cable. That links adjacent switches; the long ring-closing cable usually has to be added separately, which is what this 3 m cable is for.
Can I hot-swap a stack cable while the stack is running?
Cisco warns that removing a stack cable on a live stack can split it or trigger a stack merge. In a closed ring with one cable pulled the stack keeps working, but plan changes in a maintenance window and reconnect before touching a second cable.
How many switches can one stack hold?
Cisco specifies up to eight switches in a Catalyst 9300 StackWise-480 stack and up to nine in a Catalyst 3850 stack. The cable length does not change these limits.
Is 3 m long enough to reach another rack?
For two racks standing side by side, usually yes. Measure the path from the rear stack port, across the rack frames and back to the other switch, and keep the coil diameter above 182 mm before you order.
Singular Expert Insight · Buyer's Guide
On stacks of four or more switches, budget for a 3 m cable from the start: the ring-closing run from the bottom switch to the top one is the cable people forget, and without it the stack runs as an open chain at half bandwidth with no redundancy. If you are refreshing switching at the same time, check which
Catalyst and business switches you are standardising on before buying spares, since 9300L models need a different cable.
✓ Buy it if Buy it if you run or are building a Catalyst 9300, 9300X or 3850 stack and need a cable long enough to close the ring or span two adjacent racks.
✕ Skip it if Skip it for Catalyst 9300L, 9300LM or 9200 stacks, and for neighbouring switches where a 0.5 m or 1 m STACK-T1 cable is enough.
→ Also consider Consider STACK-T1-50CM or STACK-T1-1M for links between adjacent switches, and StackPower cables if you also stack power on C9300.
