Cisco Catalyst 9300 C9300-48U-E - 48-Port Gigabit UPOE Switch, Network Essentials
48 x 1G UPOEUPOE 60 WModular uplinksNetwork Essentials
The Cisco Catalyst 9300 C9300-48U-E is a 1RU stackable enterprise access switch with 48 x 10/100/1000 Cisco UPOE ports (up to 60 W per port), a modular uplink slot and StackWise-480 stacking - built for wiring closets that power Wi-Fi access points, PTZ cameras, LED lighting or thin clients from the switch. It ships with a PWR-C1-1100WAC-P 1100 W AC power supply that gives a 822 W PoE budget, and a second bay for a redundant supply.
The license is Network Essentials (perpetual, embedded): Layer 2 switching plus basic Layer 3 for routed access - static routes, RIP and OSPF. BGP, EIGRP, full multicast and advanced segmentation need Network Advantage. Cisco makes a Cisco DNA / Catalyst software subscription (3, 5 or 7 years) mandatory at the time of purchase, at a tier that matches the network license - Essentials or Advantage. We quote the subscription together with the switch.
Before you order: the base switch has no fixed uplink ports. Order a C9300-NM network module with it (8x 10G is the common choice) unless you already have one - otherwise the switch has only its 48 Gigabit access ports.
What's in the Box
- Catalyst 9300 C9300-48U-E with the default PWR-C1-1100WAC-P 1100 W AC power supply installed (second bay blanked)
- AC power cord and 19-inch rack-mount brackets with screws
- Network module, StackWise and StackPower cables are configuration options - what ships depends on how the unit was ordered; we confirm it with you before you order
- No transceivers and no console cable (optional accessory)
What It Means in Practice
- 822 W with the default supply powers about 27 devices at a full 30 W (PoE+) or 13 at a full 60 W (UPOE); add a second PSU to run all 48 ports at PoE+.
- Gigabit copper suits desktops, IP phones, printers and Wi-Fi 6 access points; multigigabit Wi-Fi 6E/7 access points would be held at 1 Gbps.
- Stack up to 8 units over StackWise-480 and manage them as one switch with one IP address; StackPower lets the stack share PSU capacity.
- Fans and power supplies are hot-swappable from the rear, so a failed part is replaced without downtime.
What Will Not Work
- Uplinks without a network module: the base chassis has one empty modular slot (C9300-NM-4G, -4M, -8X, -2Q or -2Y fit).
- C9300X-NM modules (8Y, 2C, 4C, 8M) do not fit - they are for Catalyst 9300X only.
- Stacking with Catalyst 9200, 9300L or 9300LM is not possible - StackWise-480 stacks only with Catalyst 9300 and 9300X.
- SFP/SFP+/QSFP optics and DAC cables are not included - use Cisco-supported pluggables.
- 802.3bt Type 4 (90 W) devices: UPOE gives up to 60 W per port - devices that need more run at reduced power or not at all.
- 2.5G/5G/10G on the access ports: these are 1 Gbps ports - for multigigabit access points choose a C9300-48UXM or C9300-24UX.
- Advanced routing (BGP, EIGRP, IS-IS), full PIM multicast and advanced segmentation: not on Network Essentials - they need a Network Advantage upgrade license.
Key Features
48-port Gigabit UPOE
Cisco UPOE at up to 60 W on every port, backwards compatible with 802.3af/at devices; 822 W budget with the default 1100 W supply.
Modular uplinks
One hot-swappable slot: 4x 1G, 4x mGig, 8x 10G, 2x 25G or 2x 40G. Choose the uplink you need today and change it when the core is upgraded.
StackWise-480 + StackPower
Up to 8 switches as one logical unit with 480 Gbps stack bandwidth; StackPower pools PSU capacity across the stack.
Redundant power and cooling
Second PSU bay for 1+1 redundancy or a larger PoE budget; three hot-swap fans with N+1 redundancy.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Cisco subscription included?
The perpetual Network Essentials license is embedded in the switch. The Cisco DNA / Catalyst subscription is a separate line that Cisco makes mandatory at purchase (3, 5 or 7 years) - we include it in the quote.
Which network module should I pick?
C9300-NM-8X (8x 10G SFP+) is the usual uplink to a 10G core or to servers; C9300-NM-2Y (2x 25G) or -2Q (2x 40G) for faster cores; C9300-NM-4G only for an existing 1G fibre backbone.
Can I add a second power supply later?
Yes. Bay 2 takes a second PWR-C1 supply for redundancy and a larger PoE budget (1172 / 1537 / 1800 W depending on the PSU). Both bays are hot-swap.
Singular Expert Insight · Buyer's Guide
The 48U-E is the same UPOE hardware as the -A model at a lower license tier. Network Essentials covers VLANs, static and OSPF routed access, QoS and the usual access-security features - enough for most wiring closets. Pick -A only if the switch will run BGP or EIGRP, multicast routing or SD-Access fabric roles. See our
managed switch range for other port counts and PoE levels.
✓ Buy it if you need 48 PoE ports with room for 60 W devices in an access closet that does VLANs and basic routing.
✕ Skip it if your devices need no more than 30 W (the C9300-48P-E costs less) or the switch must run BGP/EIGRP (take the C9300-48U-A).
