The Cisco Firepower 1140 (part number FPR1140-ASA-K9) is a 1U rack-mount security appliance for growing offices, branch hubs and small data rooms, shipped with Cisco ASA software. It has 8 × 1 GbE RJ-45 + 4 × 1 GbE SFP, a dedicated management port and 16 GB of memory with a field-replaceable 200 GB SSD. With ASA it delivers up to 6 Gbps of stateful firewall throughput and 1.2 Gbps of IPsec VPN, the familiar Cisco firewall that many networks already run. In practice it protects the internet edge, connects remote users and sites over VPN and separates the office network into safer zones.

Compatibility — check before buying:
It ships with Cisco ASA software. ASA is a classic stateful firewall and VPN head-end; Cisco’s IPS, Malware Defense and URL Filtering subscriptions run only on Threat Defense, so the unit would have to be reimaged to FTD for them. The four SFP ports are 1 GbE only and no transceivers are included. Do not confuse it with the Firepower 1150, which adds two 10 GbE SFP+ ports. Frequently Asked Questions

Can it run Threat Defense instead of ASA?
Yes. Cisco documents reimaging between ASA and Threat Defense on the Firepower 1140. The device must first be removed from Smart Licensing, and licences follow the software, so ask us before switching.
Which licences do I need?
The ASA Standard licence covers firewall and site-to-site VPN. Remote-access VPN needs Cisco Secure Client licences; extra security contexts beyond the two included are licensed.
Are SFP modules included?
No. The four SFP ports take 1 GbE transceivers, ordered separately. For 10 GbE, look at the Firepower 1150.
How many users does it suit?
It depends on traffic more than headcount. Cisco rates it at 6 Gbps stateful firewall. Tell us your internet speed and VPN users and we check the fit.
