HP 72 Grey and Photo Black Printhead — C9380A for DesignJet T770, T790, T795 and T1300
Genuine HPHP 72Grey + Photo BlackDesignJet
The HP 72 C9380A is the genuine HP DesignJet printhead for the grey and photo black inks, used in the HP DesignJet T770, T790, T795 and T1300 large-format printers.
Each HP 72 printhead serves two colours; a full set is three heads. C9380A handles grey and photo black, so when photo-black areas or neutral greys show banding or missing nozzles that cleaning cannot recover, this is the head to replace — not the whole set.
Before you order: The HP 72 family has three printheads: C9380A (grey + photo black), C9383A (magenta + cyan) and C9384A (matte black + yellow). Check which colours the printer reports before ordering. HP 72 ink cartridges are separate products.
What's in the Box
- 1 x HP 72 Grey and Photo Black DesignJet printhead (C9380A)
What It Means in Practice
- HP Thermal Inkjet head with 2,112 nozzles, 6 pl drops and a 0.85-inch print swath.
- Only the head named by the printer needs replacing — the other two keep working.
- HP warranties the head until its warranty-end date or its warranted usage limit, whichever comes first.
- Operating range per HP: 15–35 °C and 20–80% relative humidity.
What Will Not Work
- It does not replace the magenta/cyan (C9383A) or matte black/yellow (C9384A) heads.
- It is not an ink cartridge — HP 72 inks are separate.
- It does not fit DesignJet models that use HP 70, HP 712 or HP 727 printheads.
- It will not fix paper feed or cutter faults.

Frequently Asked Questions
Singular Expert Insight · Buyer's Guide
On HP 72 DesignJets, grey and photo black are used heavily in CAD shading and photo output, so C9380A is often the first head to wear. Use the printer's printhead status page to confirm before ordering. Our printer accessories and service parts page lists other DesignJet supplies.
✓ Buy it if your DesignJet T770, T790, T795 or T1300 reports the grey/photo black printhead faulty or worn.
✕ Skip it if the printer reports the magenta/cyan or matte black/yellow head.
→ Also consider HP 72 C9383A and C9384A printheads to complete a full set.
Not sure which head your DesignJet needs? Send us the model and the printhead status message and we will check it before you order.
