The HP 72 Gray Original Ink Cartridge, part number C9374A, is a 130 ml genuine HP ink supply for large-format DesignJet T-series plotters, used alongside the black and colour cartridges to produce true neutral greys in photo, map and presentation prints. It uses HP Vivera pigment ink, which is fast-drying and formulated for smudge resistance and long display life on a wide range of coated and photo media. Compatibility — check before buying:
This is an ink cartridge only — it does not contain a printhead. The grey ink is delivered through the separate HP 72 Gray and Photo Black printhead (C9380A), which is a consumable in its own right and is replaced far less often than the ink. Fits HP DesignJet T610, T620, T770, T790, T795, T1100, T1100 MFP, T1100ps, T1120, T1120ps, T1200, T1300 and T2300. It does not fit the newer DesignJet T500, T600, T900, T1600, T2600 or Studio series, which use different HP ink numbers — check the number printed on the cartridge bay of your plotter before ordering. HP also sells the same grey ink in a smaller 69 ml cartridge (C9401A) for lower-volume users.

Does the C9374A cartridge include a printhead?
No. C9374A is ink only. The grey ink is fired through the separate HP 72 Gray and Photo Black printhead, part number C9380A, which you buy once and replace far less frequently than the ink cartridges. If your plot quality shows banding or missing lines that cleaning cycles will not fix, it is usually the printhead rather than the ink that needs replacing.
Which HP DesignJet printers is the HP 72 Gray cartridge for?
It fits the HP DesignJet T610, T620, T770, T790, T795, T1100, T1100 MFP, T1100ps, T1120, T1120ps, T1200, T1300 and T2300. Newer DesignJet families such as the T500, T600, T900, T1600, T2600 and Studio models use different ink numbers and will not accept an HP 72 cartridge, so check the supply number printed inside the cartridge bay of your machine first.
What is the difference between the 130 ml and 69 ml HP 72 Gray cartridges?
Only the volume of ink. The 130 ml C9374A and the 69 ml C9401A hold the same HP Vivera pigment grey ink and fit exactly the same printers. The 130 ml cartridge costs less per millilitre and means fewer interruptions, so it suits an office that plots regularly; the 69 ml version makes more sense if the plotter is used occasionally and you would rather not have ink sitting on a shelf.
Why use grey ink instead of just printing in black?
The grey channel exists so the plotter can build neutral tones directly rather than approximating them with cyan, magenta and yellow. On black-and-white photographs, greyscale site plans and shaded renderings this gives smoother gradients, better shadow detail and, most importantly, no green or magenta cast in areas that should be neutral.
