DIGITUS Gigabit Media Converter — RJ45 to ST Multimode (1000Base-SX)
1000Base-SX · 850 nmRJ45 10/100/1000ST duplex · up to 0.5 kmPower adapter included
The DIGITUS DN-82110-1 is a standalone Gigabit media converter that links a 10/100/1000 Mbps copper RJ45 device to a duplex multimode fibre run with ST connectors, at 850 nm over distances of up to 0.5 km. It is meant for buildings and campuses that still have ST-terminated multimode fibre in the walls and need to bring a switch, router or single device onto that fibre without replacing patch panels.
You use converters in pairs or against existing fibre gear: on one side the RJ45 port takes a normal network cable from your switch or PC; on the other side the two ST connectors (transmit and receive) go to the fibre pair. The far end must be another 1000Base-SX device on 850 nm multimode — a second DN-82110-1, a converter with SC connectors via the right patch cord, or a switch with a 1000Base-SX SFP module.
Before you order: This is a multimode, 850 nm, ST unit. It will not link over single-mode (yellow) fibre, and it will not talk to 1000Base-LX (1310 nm) equipment. Check the connector type in your patch panel — ST is the round bayonet type; if your panel is SC or LC you need a hybrid patch cord or the SC version of this converter.
What's in the Box
- 1 × DIGITUS DN-82110-1 Gigabit media converter (RJ45 / ST)
- 1 × external power adapter (5 V DC)
- 1 × quick installation guide
- No fibre patch cords or network cables are included
What It Means in Practice
- Typical job: connect two buildings or floors that are already linked with orange/aqua multimode fibre on ST panels, using one converter at each end.
- Copper side auto-negotiates 10, 100 or 1000 Mbps and auto MDI/MDI-X, so any normal patch cable works — straight or crossover.
- Link Fault Pass-through (LFP) can be enabled by DIP switch: when the fibre or copper link fails, the converter drops the other side too, so your switch or monitoring system sees the outage instead of a dead link that still looks "up".
- The 0.5 km figure is the published maximum for multimode; older 62.5/125 µm (OM1) fibre usually reaches less than 50/125 µm (OM2 or better) at Gigabit speed.
- Compact standalone housing (95 × 70 × 26 mm) that sits on a shelf or in a network cabinet next to the patch panel; it needs a free power socket for the adapter.
What Will Not Work
- Single-mode (OS1/OS2, yellow) fibre — use a 1000Base-LX single-mode converter instead.
- Pairing with a 1310 nm or BiDi (single-fibre) converter — both ends must be 1000Base-SX, 850 nm, two fibres.
- SC or LC panels without an adapter cord — the connectors on the unit are ST.
- 10 Gigabit links — this is a 1 Gbps converter.
- Power over Ethernet — the RJ45 port does not supply or pass PoE.
Key Features
Gigabit over multimode
Converts 10/100/1000Base-T copper to 1000Base-SX at 850 nm over 50/125 or 62.5/125 µm multimode fibre, up to 0.5 km.
Link Fault Pass-through
LFP, switchable by DIP switch, mirrors a link loss to the other port so network monitoring reports real outages.
Plug and play
Auto-negotiation and auto MDI/MDI-X on the copper port, 2 MB buffer, no configuration software.
Status at a glance
LEDs for power, link and activity help when you are tracing a fibre run during installation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need two of these?
You need a matching 1000Base-SX device at the other end of the fibre. That can be a second DN-82110-1, any 850 nm Gigabit multimode converter, or a switch with a 1000Base-SX SFP module.
Can I use it with OM3 or OM4 fibre?
Yes — OM3/OM4 are 50/125 µm multimode fibre, which this converter supports. The published distance stays 0.5 km.
My panel has SC connectors — will it work?
Yes, with an ST-to-SC multimode patch cord. Or choose the DIGITUS SC version (DN-82120-1) so the cords are standard.
Singular Expert Insight · Buyer's Guide
Media converters are the cheapest way to reuse old multimode fibre, and ST panels are still common in older Cyprus office buildings and hotels. If the fibre ends at a switch, a 1000Base-SX SFP module in one of our
switches with SFP ports is often tidier than a second converter. Check the jacket colour first: orange or aqua means multimode and this unit fits; yellow means single-mode and it will not.
✓ Buy it if you have ST-terminated multimode fibre and need Gigabit from a switch or device that only has RJ45.
✕ Skip it if your fibre is single-mode (yellow), runs longer than 0.5 km, or your panel is SC — pick the matching single-mode or SC converter.
→ Also consider DIGITUS DN-82120-1 (same converter with SC connectors) or a switch with SFP slots and a 1000Base-SX module.
