SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD V3 4TB — USB 3.2 Gen 2x2, up to 2000MB/s

The SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD V3 4TB (SDSSDE70-4T00-G25) is a pocket-size external SSD with a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 (20Gbps) USB-C interface and up to 2000MB/s sequential read, built for photographers, video editors and anyone who moves large projects between computers and needs them to survive a bag, a shoot or a site visit.
This is the third generation of the familiar Extreme portable drive with the orange carabiner loop. Compared with the earlier V2 (SDSSDE61, up to 1050MB/s over USB 3.2 Gen 2), the V3 roughly doubles the published read speed — but only when it is connected to a port that actually supports USB 3.2 Gen 2x2. On other ports it still works, at the speed of that port. The 4TB version is offered in Black only.
Before you order: The 2000MB/s figure needs a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 (20Gbps) USB-C port. Apple Macs and most Thunderbolt-only ports do not support Gen 2x2, so on a Mac the drive runs at USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10Gbps) speed — roughly half. Check your port, or send us the model of your computer.
What's in the Box
- SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD V3, 4TB, Black
- USB-C to USB-C cable
- Quick Install and Warranty Guide
- No USB-A cable or adapter is included
What It Means in Practice
- On a PC or laptop with a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 (20Gbps) USB-C port you get the full speed class: up to 2000MB/s read and up to 1700MB/s write — SanDisk quotes moving about 1,000 high-resolution photos in under 60 seconds.
- On a standard USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10Gbps) USB-C port, including Macs, the drive runs at that port's speed, which is still several times faster than a portable hard drive.
- 4TB is enough to keep a full season of RAW photos, several 4K video projects or a complete system backup on one drive you can carry in a pocket.
- IP65 means it is dust-tight and resists water jets (tested at 30 kPa for 3 minutes) — rain on a shoot or a spilled drink is covered, submersion is not. Dry it before connecting.
- Drop protection up to 3 metres and the carabiner loop make it suitable for field work, travel and site visits rather than only desk use.
- Password protection with 256-bit AES hardware encryption keeps the data unreadable if the drive is lost; this requires the SanDisk software on Windows or macOS.
What Will Not Work
- It will not reach 2000MB/s on a Mac, on a Thunderbolt-only port or on any USB-C port that is not USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 — the speed drops to what that port supports.
- It will not connect to a USB-A port with the included cable — you need a separate USB-C to USB-A cable or adapter, and speed is then limited to that port (USB 3.2 Gen 1/Gen 2 or slower).
- It is not an internal drive and cannot be fitted in a laptop or desktop M.2 or SATA bay — for that see our internal SSDs.
- It is not waterproof for submersion: IP65 covers dust and water jets, not immersion.
- Hardware encryption with password does not work on its own on every device — it needs the SanDisk software on a supported Windows or macOS computer; on phones and tablets the drive works as normal storage.

Frequently Asked Questions
What speed will I get on a MacBook?
Macs do not support USB 3.2 Gen 2x2, so the drive connects at USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10Gbps). It works normally and is still fast, but you will not see the 2000MB/s figure. If you only work on Macs, the price difference to a Gen 2 drive is worth considering.
How do I know if my PC has a Gen 2x2 port?
Look for a USB-C port labelled 20Gbps or SS20 in the manual or on the chassis. Many desktop motherboards have one on the rear panel or as a front header. Send us the model and we will check.
Is the 4TB version available in blue?
No. SanDisk lists the Monterey Blue colour only for 500GB, 1TB and 2TB; the 4TB V3 is Black only.
Can I use it with an iPhone or Android phone?
Yes — SanDisk lists Android 10+ and the Files app on iOS 17+. Use a phone with a USB-C port; the included USB-C to USB-C cable fits directly.
Singular Expert Insight · Buyer's Guide
The V3 is the sensible upgrade when your workflow is on Windows PCs with a 20Gbps USB-C port — that is where the doubled speed actually shows. For Mac-only users the drive still works well, but at Gen 2 speed, so the decision there is about capacity and toughness rather than speed. Compare other options in our
External SSDs range.
✓ Buy it if you need 4TB of fast, rugged storage you can carry every day and your computer has a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 (20Gbps) USB-C port.
✕ Skip it if you work only on Macs or USB-A ports and do not need 4TB — a USB 3.2 Gen 2 portable SSD gives the same real-world speed there.
→ Also consider the 2TB SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD V3 (SDSSDE70-2T00-G25) if 4TB is more than you need, or an internal NVMe SSD if the drive will stay inside one computer.
