Ricoh fi-8290: 90 ppm duplex feeder plus an A4 flatbed for passports and books
90 ppm / 180 ipm duplex100-sheet ADF + A4 flatbedGigabit LAN + USB 3.213,000 sheets/day
The Ricoh fi-8290 is a departmental document scanner that combines a 90 ppm duplex feeder with an A4 flatbed, for offices, banks, hotels and public counters that scan both document stacks and items that cannot go through rollers, such as passports, bound pages and fragile originals. The 100-sheet ADF uses dual CIS sensors and the flatbed uses a colour CCD sensor; it connects by USB 3.2 Gen 1 or Gigabit Ethernet. Earlier units with this part number carried the Fujitsu badge; current units are Ricoh-branded with the same hardware, drivers and consumables. Expected daily volume is 13,000 sheets. In practice the flatbed changes who can use it: a hotel reception can scan a guest's passport on the glass and the registration form through the feeder into the same file, and a bank or public counter can keep identity documents off the rollers entirely. PaperStream IP still does the clean-up work automatically, removing blank pages, straightening skewed sheets and cleaning backgrounds, and job profiles keep the routine steps to one touch.
Before you order: At 300 x 577 x 234 mm and 8.8 kg it needs noticeably more desk depth than a feeder-only scanner. Official OS support is Windows 11/10, Windows Server and Linux (Ubuntu); if you work on macOS, ask us before ordering.
What's in the Box
- Ricoh fi-8290 scanner
- ADF paper chute
- AC adapter
- AC cable
- USB cable
- Setup DVD-ROM
What It Means in Practice
- Passports, ID booklets and stapled or bound pages go on the flatbed, while the rest of the file runs through the feeder, so one scanner handles a full customer onboarding. The flatbed lid lifts so thicker items lie flat for a clean image.
- The feeder runs at 90 ppm with 100 sheets per load, the same speed as the matching feeder-only model. That makes it a straight replacement for a feeder-only scanner without losing throughput.
- Paper from 20 to 465 g/m2 and plastic cards up to 1.4 mm feed through the ADF, reducing what needs to go on the glass. Card scanning through the feeder is quicker than placing each card on the glass.
- Gigabit Ethernet and PaperStream NX Manager let a counter scanner be shared or managed centrally.
- Long pages up to 6,096 mm can still be captured through the feeder, so printouts and continuous forms are covered as well.
What Will Not Work
- No A3: both the feeder and the flatbed are A4/Legal-class.
- No Wi-Fi: networking is wired only.
- Not compact: the flatbed adds depth and weight compared with the feeder-only model.
- Not for production volumes beyond about 13,000 sheets a day.
- Don't accidentally order the fi-8190: same feeder speed but no flatbed. Fujitsu-badged and Ricoh-badged units with this part number are the same scanner.
Key Features
Flatbed plus feeder
A colour CCD flatbed for passports, books and fragile originals, with a dual-CIS 100-sheet ADF for stacks. It reduces the number of separate devices at the counter.
Clear Image Capture
Consistent image quality that improves OCR accuracy across mixed documents. Bound documents up to the flatbed area stay flat on the glass instead of passing rollers.
Professional software
PaperStream IP (TWAIN/ISIS), PaperStream Capture, ClickScan and Scanner Central Admin are included. Booklets up to 7 mm can also go through manual feed when speed matters more.
Shared consumables
The feeder uses the CON-3810-400K roller kit, the same as the fi-8150, fi-8170 and fi-8190. One spares stock covers both flatbed and feeder-only models in a fleet.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the fi-8290 and the fi-8270?
Same flatbed and features; the fi-8290 feeder is rated 90 ppm and 13,000 sheets per day.
Can I scan a passport through the feeder instead?
Booklets can be fed in manual feed, but the flatbed gives the safest result for passports and anything you cannot risk creasing.
Which consumables does it use?
The CON-3810-400K roller kit (about 400,000 scans) and CON-CLE-W72 cleaning wipes.
Can we scan straight into our document-management or KYC system?
Usually yes, through the TWAIN or ISIS driver or a watched folder; send us the software name and version and we confirm compatibility before you order. Existing fi-series PaperStream profiles can usually be reused.
Singular Expert Insight · Buyer's Guide
Buy the flatbed version only if passports, books or fragile originals are a regular part of the job; otherwise the fi-8190 is smaller and gives the same feeder speed. For shared counter scanning, a Gigabit
network switch port keeps network scans quick. Check desk depth before ordering, since the flatbed body is 577 mm deep. The flatbed also makes it a good fit for scanning receipts stapled to expense forms without removing staples.
✓ Buy it if Buy it if you scan stacks and passports or bound pages at the same desk and want professional TWAIN/ISIS drivers. It suits hotels, banks, clinics and public counters in particular.
✕ Skip it if Skip it if you never use a flatbed, need A3 or want Wi-Fi. In that case a feeder-only fi-8100 model is smaller and costs less.
→ Also consider Also consider the Ricoh fi-8190 for the same feeder speed without a flatbed, or the fi-8270 for a different speed.
