Herlitz SoftLight Plus GreenLine Explorer — 18 L Primary School Backpack Set
Primary School Backpack Set18 L · Under 800 g Empty68% Certified Recycled PolyesterIGR-Certified Back System
This is a children’s primary school backpack set, not a laptop bag. The Herlitz SoftLight GREENline in its Plus configuration is a Grundschulrucksack — a German-style school backpack for primary school — supplied with a filled 16-piece pencil case, an oval Faulenzer pencil pouch, a sports bag, a lunch box, a removable velcro application patch and a felt turtle dangler. The backpack holds 18 litres in a 38 x 28 x 23 cm body and weighs under 800 g empty, which is exceptionally light for the class. The outer fabric contains 68% certified recycled polyester under Control Union certificate CU 1108351. It closes with a Fidlock magnetic closure that a child can operate one-handed, carries Orafol high-reflective material on the front, both sides and the shoulder straps, and uses an IGR-certified back system with breathable padding, a height-adjustable chest strap and a removable hip belt. Colourway: Explorer. The felt turtle dangler supplied with this colourway is green.

Read this before ordering, because it is filed in the wrong place. This product has no laptop compartment and no tablet compartment of any kind. Herlitz’s published compartment list is one main compartment with an integrated book divider plus two zipped side pockets. It is a school backpack for children, and it appears in our laptop cases section only because of how it was originally catalogued. If you came here looking for a laptop bag, this is not one.
It is a set, not a single backpack. Herlitz enumerates the contents as: the backpack, a filled 16-piece pencil case, an oval Faulenzer pencil pouch, a sports bag, a lunch box, one removable velcro application patch and one felt turtle dangler. Herlitz does not publish a numeric piece count for the Plus configuration, so we do not state one — the “6-piece” figure circulating in the trade is a distributor claim. At least one retailer describes this article as a single backpack rather than a set; that is wrong.
⚠ It is NOT certified to DIN 58124. That is the German standard for school-satchel visibility, and it is a significant selling point on satchels that carry it. Herlitz reserves DIN 58124 to its FiloActive DIN model, which has fluorescent warning panels. The SoftLight GREENline has retroreflective material only, no fluorescent surfaces, and Herlitz makes no DIN claim for it. Do not assume road-safety certification.
Two figures in circulation are wrong. The capacity is 18 litres, not the 16 L that several retailers print. And the weight is under 800 g for the empty backpack — figures of 1,325 g or 1.6 kg refer to the complete set or the shipping carton. Herlitz publishes no gender for this product; the “for boys” and “for girls” tags that appear on distributor listings, including our own previous one, are invented.
What is not published: a numeric age or body-height range, the reflective surface area or percentage, individual accessory dimensions, the filled weight, and the country of manufacture. The back length is not adjustable on this model — that is a FiloActive feature.
Best For
✓ Primary school children — Herlitz positions this as a Grundschulrucksack, from the first school year
✓ Parents prioritising low weight: under 800 g empty is exceptionally light for a school backpack
✓ Buyers who want verified recycled content — 68% certified recycled polyester with a Control Union certificate
✓ Children who struggle with buckles — the Fidlock magnetic closure works one-handed
✓ Families wanting the whole set in one purchase: pencil case, pouch, sports bag and lunch box included
Key Features
Under 800 grams empty
Herlitz publishes the empty backpack weight as under 800 g, which is very light for an 18 litre school backpack. For a primary-school child carrying books daily, the weight of the bag itself is not a detail — it is the part you can actually control.
68% certified recycled polyester
Herlitz’s GREENline claim, in its own words: the outer fabric contains 68% certified recycled polyester, backed by Control Union certificate CU 1108351. Note the scope — this covers the outer fabric. Linings, foams, hardware, the base plate, the straps and the set accessories are not covered by that figure and Herlitz publishes none for them.
Fidlock magnetic closure
A magnetic closure that snaps shut and releases with one hand. On a school bag opened and closed a dozen times a day by a six-year-old, this is the feature that gets used most and appreciated most.
IGR-certified back system
Certified by the Institut für Gesundheit und Ergonomie, with ergonomically shaped breathable back padding, padded adjustable shoulder straps, a height-adjustable chest strap and a removable hip belt. Herlitz has won an Innovation Award for Ergonomics with this design. Note that the back length does not adjust on this model.
Reflective on three surfaces
Orafol high-reflective material on the front, both sides and the shoulder straps — so the child is visible from the front, the sides and behind. Herlitz publishes no surface area or percentage, and there are no fluorescent day-glo panels; this is retroreflective material only.
A complete set, and a stable base
Beyond the backpack: a filled 16-piece pencil case, an oval Faulenzer pouch, a sports bag, a lunch box, a removable velcro patch and a felt turtle dangler. The bag has a stable base plate with plastic feet, so it stands up rather than toppling, and the fabric carries a water-repellent impregnation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does it have a laptop or tablet compartment?
No, neither. Herlitz publishes one main compartment with an integrated book divider and two zipped side pockets, and nothing else. This is a children’s primary school backpack; it appears in our laptop cases section because of how it was originally catalogued, not because it is a laptop bag.
What comes in the set?
Herlitz lists: the backpack, a filled 16-piece pencil case, an oval Faulenzer pencil pouch, a sports bag, a lunch box, one removable velcro application patch and one felt turtle dangler. Herlitz does not publish a numeric piece count for the Plus configuration, so we do not state one.
Is it 16 or 18 litres?
18 litres. Herlitz publishes 18 L on its German and English product pages and in its own product data. The 16 L figure printed by several retailers is wrong.
What does it weigh?
Under 800 g for the empty backpack, per Herlitz. Figures of 1,325 g or 1.6 kg that appear on some listings refer to the complete set or the shipping carton, not the bag.
Is it certified to DIN 58124?
No. That is the German school-satchel visibility standard, and Herlitz reserves it to its FiloActive DIN model, which has fluorescent warning panels. This model has retroreflective Orafol material on the front, sides and straps, but no fluorescent surfaces and no DIN claim.
Is it for a boy or a girl?
Herlitz publishes no gender for this product. The “for boys” and “for girls” tags on various listings, including our own previous one, are distributor inventions.
Can the back length be adjusted as the child grows?
No. The back system is IGR certified and the shoulder straps, chest strap and hip belt all adjust, but the back length itself is fixed on this model. Continuously adjustable back length is a feature of Herlitz’s FiloActive range.
What warranty applies?
Pelikan/Herlitz give a two-year manufacturer guarantee from the date of purchase, covering material and manufacturing defects, with repair, replacement or free spare parts. It covers the backpack only — the sports bag and pencil cases are excluded — and no registration is required, though you need proof of purchase. Our store warranty is one year, and both sit alongside your statutory rights.
Singular Expert Insight
The first thing to say is that this product is in the wrong aisle, and we would rather tell you than let you find out. It is a children’s primary school backpack set. There is no laptop compartment and no tablet compartment — Herlitz publishes one main compartment with a book divider and two zipped side pockets, and that is the entire list. If you arrived here looking for a bag for a laptop, stop.
Judged as what it actually is, it is a good one, and the number that matters is the weight. Under 800 grams empty for an 18 litre school backpack is genuinely light — Herlitz’s own comparable models run from about 750 g to 1,250 g, and the heavier ones are heavier by half a kilo before a single book goes in. For a six-year-old, the mass of the empty bag is the only part of the daily load anyone can actually control.
The Fidlock magnetic closure is the feature children notice. It snaps closed by itself and opens with one hand, which matters when the alternative is a buckle threaded through a strap by someone with small hands in a hurry. The IGR-certified back system, with a height-adjustable chest strap and a removable hip belt, is the feature parents should notice — though be clear that the back length does not adjust on this model. If you want a satchel that grows with the child over several years, Herlitz’s FiloActive range is the one with the continuously adjustable back.
Two things need stating plainly because the trade gets both wrong. First, this model is not certified to DIN 58124. That is the German standard for school-satchel visibility, it requires fluorescent warning surfaces as well as retroreflective ones, and Herlitz applies it to its FiloActive DIN model rather than this one. The SoftLight has Orafol retroreflective material on the front, both sides and the shoulder straps — genuinely useful in headlights — but no fluorescent panels and no DIN claim. Some school-bag retailers apply blanket DIN language across their whole category; we have not.
Second, the capacity. Herlitz publishes 18 litres. Several retailers print 16, and that error has spread far enough that we found it on our own site’s listing for a sibling colourway. Similarly, the weights of 1,325 g and 1.6 kg that circulate are the whole set and the shipping carton respectively, not the bag.
On the GREENline claim, Herlitz is more precise than most: 68% certified recycled polyester in the outer fabric, with a Control Union certificate number published. That is a real, auditable figure with a stated scope. It does not cover linings, foams, hardware or the set accessories, and Herlitz publishes no figure for those — which is honest rather than evasive.
Finally, the warranty. Two years from Pelikan/Herlitz, no registration required, covering material and manufacturing defects with repair, replacement or free spare parts. Read the exclusion though: it covers the backpack only. The sports bag and the pencil cases are not covered, which is worth knowing given they are the parts a child is most likely to destroy first.
Buyer’s Guide
Buy it if
Buy this set for a child starting or in primary school, particularly if the empty weight of the bag matters to you — under 800 g is at the light end of the class. Be clear it is a school backpack set with no laptop or tablet compartment, that it is not DIN 58124 certified, and that the two-year Herlitz guarantee covers the backpack rather than the accessories. If road-safety certification is a requirement, look at the FiloActive DIN instead.
Skip it if
You are looking for a laptop or tablet bag — this has neither compartment. Also skip it if you need DIN 58124 road-safety certification with fluorescent panels, in which case Herlitz’s FiloActive DIN is the model to look at, or if you need a back system whose length adjusts as the child grows.
Also consider
The same SoftLight GREENline model is sold in other colourways — Blue Ice, Deep Sea, Pink Bubbles, Cyber Soccer and Little Monster — all with an identical chassis, capacity, weight and certification. If you need DIN 58124 road-safety certification with fluorescent panels and a continuously height-adjustable back, Herlitz’s FiloActive DIN is the model to compare, at 19 L and around 1,250 g. Herlitz also makes UltraLight (16 L, about 750 g), UltraLight XL (22 L, about 800 g), FiloActive XL (21 L) and Loop (17 L). Browse the full range of laptop cases and bags, or see our laptops.
