HP HP 712 (3ED70A) is a genuine HP designjet ink cartridge in black, 38 ml, made for owners of HP DesignJet T210, T230, T250, T630, T650 and Studio printers who want the manufacturer's own ink rather than a compatible.

The 38 ml black is the smaller HP 712 black for DesignJet T200/T600 and Studio plotters that are used occasionally.

• HP rates large-format cartridges by volume (38 ml), not by pages — how far it goes depends on the size of your prints and how much of the sheet is covered. Line drawings and CAD plots use little ink; full-colour posters and renders use a lot.
• Same slot as the 80 ml HP 712 black. The smaller size makes sense when the plotter runs a few times a month: HP gives an 18-month shelf life, so ink should not sit unused for too long.
• HP states 100-year plain-paper archivability for the black ink (dark storage).
• The printhead is a separate part that stays in the printer — this cartridge is only the ink supply. If print quality drops while there is still ink, the fix is usually a printhead clean from the printer menu, not another cartridge.
• Installing takes a minute: when the plotter reports low ink, open the ink-cartridge cover, take out the old cartridge, shake the new one gently if the instructions on the box ask for it, and push it in until it locks. The front panel confirms the new cartridge.
• Keep spare cartridges sealed in their box at room temperature and install them before the date printed on the packaging; an opened cartridge is best used rather than stored.
• Empty HP cartridges can be returned for free recycling through HP Planet Partners where the programme is offered.
