HP 72 130-ml Yellow DesignJet Ink Cartridge
Original HPYellow · 130 mlHP 72DesignJet T-series (HP 72)
HP 72 130-ml Yellow DesignJet Ink Cartridge (C9373A) is the genuine HP ink cartridge holding 130 ml of dye-based yellow ink for the HP DesignJet T-series (HP 72) large-format printers used for CAD, GIS and technical drawings.
DesignJet printers keep the ink in separate cartridges and the printheads in their own slots, so you replace each colour as it runs low. HP does not publish a page yield for plotter ink — consumption depends on how much area you cover, from a few millilitres for a line drawing to far more for a full-colour poster. The 130 ml size costs less per millilitre than the 69 ml HP 72 Yellow (C9400A).
Ordering by the exact part number (C9373A) is the safest route: HP uses similar names across printer families, and a supply that looks identical but carries a different number will not be recognised by the printer. If you are replacing a supply that is already installed, the part number is printed on its label and in the printer's supplies status page.
Original or compatible? A genuine HP supply is the one the printer and its colour profiles are calibrated for, it reports ink levels correctly, and it keeps the printer within HP's support terms. Compatible inks cost less up front but can shift colours, clog nozzles over time or be rejected after a firmware update — for business-critical printers, original is the lower-risk choice.
Before you order: HP 72 cartridges fit only the DesignJet T610/T620/T770/T790/T795/T1100/T1120/T1200/T1300/T2300. The HP 72, 727, 728 and 730 look alike but are not interchangeable — check the number on the cartridge you are replacing.
What's in the Box
- 1 x HP 72 130-ml Yellow DesignJet Ink Cartridge (130 ml)
- Factory-sealed retail packaging with the manufacturer's installation guidance on the pack
- No printer, printhead or cables are included
What It Means in Practice
- Dye-based yellow gives bright colour for renders, maps and posters on coated and photo media.
- The printer warns before the cartridge is empty and you can swap it mid-job without losing the print, so one spare per colour is enough for most offices.
- Ink is measured in millilitres, not pages: a mostly-line CAD workload uses very little colour ink, while posters and GIS maps use much more.
- The cartridge is ink only — printheads are separate parts and are replaced far less often.
- Installation is tool-free: open the ink door, release the empty cartridge, insert the new one until it locks and close the door — the printer confirms the new supply on its panel.
- Used supplies can go to manufacturer recycling schemes rather than general waste; keep the empty in its bag to avoid ink stains in transport.
- Need several colours or a spare? Send us your printer model and current ink status and we will quote the full set in one order.
What Will Not Work
- HP 727 (T920/T930/T1500/T1530/T2500/T2530), HP 728 (T730/T830) or HP 730 (T1600/T1700/T2600) printers — each family has its own cartridge shape and chip.
- HP 70 cartridges for the DesignJet Z2100/Z3200 and Photosmart Pro — the HP 72 will not seat in them.
- It is not a printhead: if a colour still prints badly after cleaning and a fresh cartridge, the HP 72 printhead is what needs replacing.
Key Features
Genuine HP 72 ink
Formulated with the DesignJet printhead, so colour, drying and nozzle health match HP's settings.
130 ml capacity
Sized for regular office plotting — the standard size for these printers.
Hot-swappable
Replace the cartridge mid-job when the printer asks; the print continues.
Chip-tracked
The printer reads ink level and expiry from the chip, so you see remaining ink on the front panel and in HP software.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use the 130 ml cartridge where a different size was installed?
Yes — the 69 ml HP 72 Yellow (C9400A) and this 130 ml cartridge fit the same slot.
How many prints will I get?
HP does not publish a page yield for DesignJet ink because coverage varies so much. Line drawings use very little; full-colour A0 posters use a lot. The printer's accounting page shows ink used per job.
Do I need to replace the printhead too?
Usually not. Printheads last many cartridges; replace one only when cleaning and alignment do not restore quality.
How should I store a spare?
Keep it sealed in its original pack, upright where the pack indicates, at normal room temperature and away from direct sun. Install it before the date printed on the pack — out-of-date ink can cause banding and is not covered as a defect.
Singular Expert Insight · Buyer's Guide
On HP 72 printers the colour that runs out first depends on your work — CAD offices go through matte black fastest, while GIS and poster users consume cyan and magenta. Keeping one spare of the colour you burn most avoids stopping a large print. Browse our
original ink range for the other HP 72 colours and sizes.
✓ Buy it if you run a DesignJet T610/T620/T770/T790/T795/T1100/T1120/T1200/T1300/T2300 and the yellow cartridge is low or empty.
✕ Skip it if your plotter uses HP 72, 727, 728 or 730 other than HP 72 — check the number on the installed cartridge.
→ Also consider HP 72 130 ml Cyan (C9371A) and Magenta (C9372A).
