The HP 731 DesignJet Printhead (P2V27A) is the original HP printhead for the HP DesignJet T1700 and T1700dr 44-inch printers and the SD Pro 2 44-inch MFP, each head handling two of the printer’s ink colours. It is meant for CAD, GIS and technical-document studios that need to replace a worn or failed printhead and keep their plotter at full quality.
HP lists the full ink set served by the 731 heads as cyan, magenta, yellow, gray, photo black and matte black, with a 6-picolitre drop size; matte black is pigment-based and the other colours are dye-based.
Before you order: HP’s compatibility list names the DesignJet T1700, T1700dr and SD Pro 2 44-in MFP. The T1708 / T1708dr and the original SD Pro MFP are not on HP’s published list — send us your exact model before ordering.

What It Means in Practice
- Replace a printhead when the printer reports it as failed or when print quality cannot be restored by cleaning and alignment.
- Each head prints two colours, so one replacement head restores those two channels.
- HP states for the T1708 that the head fits any of the printhead slots.
What Will Not Work
- DesignJet T730 / T830 printers — they use the HP 729 printhead with 728 inks
- DesignJet models that use other printhead families (for example HP 744, 727 or 711 systems)
- Ink supply — the printhead does not include ink cartridges

On the T1700 family the printheads are replaceable consumables, so a failed head does not mean a service call: install a new 731 and run the printer’s alignment. Make sure your printer is on HP’s list, since the 729 and 731 heads look alike. Browse our original ink cartridges for the HP 730 inks.
✓ Buy it if your DesignJet T1700, T1700dr or SD Pro 2 MFP reports a printhead error or banding that cleaning does not fix.
