HP 849 400-ml Black PageWide XL Ink Cartridge
Original HP400 mlBlack · pigmentPageWide XL 3900
The HP 849 400-ml Black PageWide XL Ink Cartridge is an original HP pigment-ink cartridge for the HP PageWide XL 3900 MFP, used by reprographic shops, AEC firms and print rooms producing large volumes of technical drawings and maps.
The PageWide XL 3900 runs four 400 ml HP 849 cartridges — black, cyan, magenta and yellow — and each colour is replaced on its own.
Before you order: HP's documentation lists this cartridge for the PageWide XL 3900 MFP. If you run another PageWide XL model, send us the model before ordering — older PageWide XL printers use different HP ink numbers.
What's in the Box
- 1 x HP 849 400-ml Black PageWide XL Ink Cartridge (1XB40A)
What It Means in Practice
- Black carries all line work and text in CAD drawings, so it is usually the cartridge you replace most often.
- HP's user guide says to shake the cartridge before installing it.
- Pigment ink gives dense, sharp black lines on bond and coated papers.
- Store and use between 15 and 35 °C at 20–80% relative humidity (HP operating range).
What Will Not Work
- HP DesignJet printers (T-series, Z-series) — they use HP 727, 728, 730, 746 cartridges
- HP PageWide office printers (452–785 series) — they use HP 973X, 981, 982 or 991
- PageWide XL models not listed by HP for HP 849 — ask us first

Frequently Asked Questions
Singular Expert Insight · Buyer's Guide
On a PageWide XL the black cartridge drives most of the output on CAD work, so running out stops the print room. Keep one spare black on site. The matching colours are in our original ink range.
✓ Buy it if you run an HP PageWide XL 3900 MFP.
✕ Skip it if your printer is a DesignJet or a PageWide office model — different cartridges.
→ Also consider HP 849 cyan, magenta and yellow 400 ml for the same printer.
Not sure which cartridge your printer takes? Send us the exact printer model (front panel or rating label) and we will confirm the right part before you order.
