HP LaserJet MFP M234sdn — compact networked mono laser for print, copy and scan
Mono Laser MFP29 ppm A4Auto Duplex40-Sheet ADF
The HP LaserJet MFP M234sdn is a compact A4 black-and-white laser multifunction printer that prints, copies and scans at up to 29 pages per minute, made for small offices, reception desks and home offices that print text documents every day. It prints on both sides automatically and has a 40-sheet automatic document feeder on top of the flatbed scanner, so multi-page originals can be copied or scanned without feeding them one by one.
HP rates it for up to 20,000 pages per month with a recommended volume of 200 to 2,000 pages, and it connects by wired Ethernet or USB. At 418 x 308 x 294 mm and 9.5 kg it fits on a desk or shelf next to the user it serves.
Typical jobs are invoices, delivery notes, contracts and forms: high volumes of crisp black text, quick copies of multi-page documents and scans of signed paperwork back to a PC. It is not a photo or colour device, and that focus is what keeps the purchase price and the cost per page low.
Before you order: This is the wired version: it connects over Ethernet (10/100) or USB and has no Wi-Fi in HP's specification. It also has no fax. If you need either, tell us and we will point you to the right M234 variant.
What's in the Box
- HP LaserJet MFP M234sdn printer
- Pre-installed HP black toner cartridge (approx. 700 pages)
- Power cord
- Setup poster, reference guide and warranty information
- No USB or network cable is included
What It Means in Practice
- The starter toner is short-yield; order an HP 135A or 135X cartridge with the printer if you print more than a few hundred pages a month.
- Duplex printing is automatic, but two-sided originals must be turned over by hand when copying or scanning from the ADF.
- Connect it to your router or switch with an Ethernet cable and everyone on the office network can print and scan to it; phones print through the HP Smart app, AirPrint or Mopria on the same network.
- The 150-sheet input tray holds less than a third of a ream, so in a busy office keep a pack of paper next to the printer and top it up during the day.
- Low running costs come from the high-yield 135X cartridge; there is no separate drum to replace, as the imaging parts are built into the toner cartridge.
What Will Not Work
- Colour printing — this is a black-and-white laser.
- Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi Direct — network access is wired Ethernet only.
- Faxing — there is no fax modem or phone-line port.
- Cartridges with non-HP chips: HP states the printer uses dynamic security measures to block cartridges using a non-HP chip.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which toner should I buy, 135A or 135X?
The 135X gives about 2,400 pages against 1,100 for the 135A, so it usually works out cheaper per page for anyone printing more than a few reams a year.
How do I scan multi-page documents?
Load up to 40 sheets in the feeder and scan from the HP Smart app or HP software on your computer to PDF or image files; double-sided originals are scanned one side at a time.
Can it print on thick paper or envelopes?
Yes, within 60 to 163 g/m2 from the main tray, including envelopes and labels of supported sizes.
Will it work with Windows, macOS and phones?
Yes. HP provides drivers and the HP Smart app for Windows and macOS, and iPhone and Android devices can print over the network with AirPrint or Mopria without extra software.
Singular Expert Insight · Buyer's Guide
The M234sdn sits at the sweet spot for a single user or a small team that prints black text daily and wants a document feeder and automatic duplex without paying for colour or fax. Being wired-only is an advantage where Wi-Fi is unreliable or not allowed. Compare it with our other
all-in-one laser printers if you need Wi-Fi, fax or a larger paper tray.
✓ Buy it if you want a small, dependable mono printer-copier-scanner on a wired network, up to about 2,000 pages a month.
✕ Skip it if you need colour, Wi-Fi, fax, two-sided scanning or plan to use non-HP toner.
→ Also consider HP LaserJet MFP M234dw for Wi-Fi, or a Brother MFC mono laser if you need fax and a larger tray.
