The HPE JH186A is the front (port side) to back (power side) airflow fan tray for the HPE FlexFabric 5930 4-slot switch chassis (JH179A). HPE’s QuickSpecs state that fan trays are not included with the switch and must be ordered separately, and that the chassis needs two of them. This tray pulls air in at the port side and exhausts it at the power-supply side. HPE’s 5940 QuickSpecs also list JH186A as a high-volume tray for the 5940 4-slot chassis (JH398A). In practice it is the part you order twice for a new 5930 4-slot chassis installed with the ports facing the cold aisle, or once as a spare.

Compatibility — check before buying:
Airflow direction must match. HPE does not allow front-to-back and back-to-front trays in the same chassis, and the direction must suit your rack: this tray moves air from the port side to the power side. If your switch has its ports on the hot-aisle side, you need the JH185A (back-to-front) instead. HPE also warns not to run the switch on one tray for more than 24 hours, or without any tray for more than 2 minutes, so keep a spare. Not sure? Tell us your model and we check it for you.
