The i-tec U3METALG3HUB replaces two dongles with one. A single USB-A plug on a 28 cm cable becomes a 10/100/1000 Mbps RJ-45 socket and three full-size USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports at up to 5 Gbps, in a 96 mm metal body weighing 65 g. There is no power supply to carry and nothing to install: the Realtek RTL8153 controller inside is supported natively, and i-tec states the driver installs itself from the system or Windows Update. Overcurrent protection is built in.

Compatibility — check before buying:
It is bus-powered with no power input of any kind — there is no DC jack, so three USB ports and a Gigabit controller all live on what one host USB socket supplies. That makes bus-powered hard drives a poor fit, especially while the network is busy. The Ethernet port shares the same 5 Gbps link as the three USB ports. The host plug is USB-A; the i-tec C31METALG3HUB is the identical unit with a USB-C plug, and the two look the same in photographs. There is no Power Delivery, so it cannot charge the notebook, and i-tec does not publish per-port current limits.

Do I need to install a driver for the network port?
On anything current, no. i-tec states the driver is installed automatically from the system or through Windows Update, and the Realtek RTL8153 inside is supported natively by recent versions of Windows, macOS, Chrome OS and Linux. i-tec also publishes manual driver downloads as a fallback for older systems. Tell us the operating system version if you are unsure and we will check before you order.
What is the difference between this and the i-tec C31METALG3HUB?
The plug, and essentially nothing else. The U3METALG3HUB has a USB-A host connector; the C31METALG3HUB has USB-C. Same three USB-A ports at 5 Gbps, same Gigabit socket, same Realtek RTL8153, same 96 x 30 x 21 mm metal body, same 28 cm cable, same bus-powered design with no power input. Order by the port on your laptop — the two are indistinguishable in photographs.
Can it charge my laptop or run an external drive?
No to charging: there is no power input at all and no Power Delivery, so nothing goes back to the computer. As for drives, everything the three USB ports supply comes from the single host port they share with the Gigabit controller. A flash drive or a card reader is fine; a bus-powered 2.5-inch drive alongside heavy network traffic is more than one port should carry. Tell us what you plan to connect and we will check it.
