i-tec U3HUBMETAL403 — 4-Port USB 3.0 Metal Hub
4 x USB-A at 5 GbpsMetal body, 63 g28 cm integrated cableSurge and overcurrent protection
The i-tec U3HUBMETAL403 is the metal one in i-tec’s four-port range: a 96 x 30 x 21 mm aluminium body weighing 63 g, with four USB-A ports at up to 5 Gbps on a 28 cm integrated cable. It is heavier than the plastic Slim models on purpose — it stays where you put it when four cables are pulling at it — and i-tec builds in surge and overcurrent protection plus a status LED.
Compatibility — check before buying:
The plug is USB-A. i-tec builds the same hub with a USB-C plug as the C31HUBMETAL403, so check the prefix — U3 is USB-A, C31 is USB-C, and the wrong one will not fit your machine. The hub is bus-powered with no external supply and no charging input, so it cannot charge a laptop. Keyboards, mice, dongles, flash drives, card readers and one bus-powered SSD are the right load; two spinning hard drives are not. There is no video output and no Ethernet. Watch out for the METALMINI4 models in the same family — they look similar but three of their four ports run at USB 2.0 speeds. This one is 5 Gbps on all four.
Best For
✓ Desktops and laptops that have run out of USB-A sockets
✓ Desks where a light hub gets dragged around by its cables
✓ Keyboards, mice, wireless receivers and dongles
✓ Flash drives and card readers
✓ One bus-powered external SSD at full 5 Gbps
✓ Anyone who wants metal rather than plastic
Key Features
Four ports, all at 5 Gbps
USB 3.2 Gen 1 on every socket, backward compatible with USB 2.0 devices. Worth stating plainly because two of i-tec’s similar-looking metal hubs run three ports at USB 2.0.
Metal, and heavy enough to stay put
96 x 30 x 21 mm and 63 g. Nearly twice the weight of the plastic Slim version, which is exactly what stops it sliding when you unplug something.
Protection built in
i-tec publishes surge and overcurrent protection, so a shorted peripheral trips the hub rather than the computer’s USB controller. A status LED shows the hub is live.
28 cm of cable
Longer than the 15 to 20 cm typical of compact hubs, enough to bring the hub round to the front of a laptop or up from a tower without an extension.

Singular Expert Insight
i-tec’s hub range is unusually easy to mis-order, and this is the straightforward member of it: metal, four ports, all of them fast. The two traps sit either side — the MINI4 models look almost identical and run three ports at USB 2.0, and the C31 prefix is the same hub with a USB-C plug. Get the part number right and there is little to fault: surge protection, a status LED, a 28 cm cable and a two-year i-tec term. Use it for flash drives, receivers and one external SSD; a screen or a network socket means a docking station.
Buyer’s Guide
Buy it if
You want four USB-A ports at full 5 Gbps from a USB-A machine, in a metal hub heavy enough to stay on the desk, with surge protection and a two-year term.
Skip it if
Skip it if your laptop only has USB-C, if you need power for several drives at once, or if video or Ethernet are part of the requirement.
Also consider
i-tec C31HUBMETAL403 if your computer has USB-C, or U3HUB404 if you prefer the lighter plastic Slim body.
