i-tec C31METALG3HUB — Gigabit Ethernet and three USB-A ports from one USB-C socket

Gigabit 10/100/10003 x USB-A at 5 GbpsMetal body, 63 gTwo-year i-tec warranty

The i-tec C31METALG3HUB gives a USB-C laptop back the two ports it no longer has: a 10/100/1000 Mbps wired network socket and three full-size USB-A sockets at up to 5 Gbps. It is a 96 mm metal bar weighing 63 g on a 28 cm captive USB-C cable, with no power supply to carry. Inside are a Realtek 0411 hub controller and a Realtek RTL8153 Gigabit controller, both supported natively by current systems, so the driver installs itself and there is nothing to configure.

Compatibility — check before buying:
The USB-C connector here is data only. This is not a dock: there is no Power Delivery, no power input and no video output, so plugging it in will not charge the notebook and will not drive a monitor — the laptop still needs its own charger, and it occupies a USB-C port to do it. The downstream ports are USB-A, not USB-C. Everything is bus-powered, so the Gigabit controller and three USB ports share one host port and one 5 Gbps link; a bus-powered hard drive alongside busy networking is more than that should carry. The i-tec U3METALG3HUB is the identical unit with a USB-A plug.

Best For

✓ USB-C laptops with no Ethernet socket
✓ Offices and sites where the network must be wired
✓ Engineers configuring switches, NAS and appliances
✓ Meeting rooms with a wall socket and poor Wi-Fi
✓ Getting USB-A ports back on a thin laptop
✓ Travel kits where 63 g and no brick matter

Key Features

Native USB-C, no adapter chain
A USB-C plug on a 28 cm captive cable rather than a USB-A hub with a converter hanging off it — fewer parts, fewer things to lose, and nothing extra between the laptop and the network.

Gigabit done properly
A full 10/100/1000 Mbps port on a Realtek RTL8153 controller, meeting IEEE 802.3, 802.3u and 802.3ab — a real Gigabit connection, not the 100 Mbps socket still sold at this size.

Metal, 63 g, nothing to install
A metal body for durability and heat dissipation, and drivers that install themselves from the operating system or Windows Update. No power supply, no software, no configuration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will it charge my laptop through the USB-C cable?
No. The USB-C connector here carries data only — there is no Power Delivery in either direction and no power input on the hub. Plugging it in occupies a USB-C port and gives nothing back, so the laptop still charges from its own adapter. If you want one cable to carry data, charging and a display, that is a dock rather than a hub; tell us the machine and we will match one from our docking range.
How is it different from the i-tec U3METALG3HUB?
Only the plug on the host end. The C31METALG3HUB is USB-C; the U3METALG3HUB is USB-A. Same three USB-A downstream ports at 5 Gbps, same Gigabit socket, same RTL8153 controller, same 96 x 30 x 21 mm metal body, same 28 cm cable, same bus-powered design. Order by the port on your laptop, because the two look identical in photographs.
Are the downstream ports USB-C as well?
No, and this catches people out. The host end is USB-C but the three ports it gives back are full-size USB-A — which is the point of the product: it restores the ports a USB-C-only laptop lost. If you need USB-C sockets for newer accessories, you want a hub with USB-C downstream ports instead. Tell us what you are plugging in and we will point you at the right one.
Singular Expert Insight
This is the USB-C half of a matched pair, and the case for it is simple: one 63 g metal bar removes both the Ethernet dongle and the USB hub from the bag. Within our USB hub range it is the travel option rather than the desk option, and the trade is explicit — bus-powered means one host port feeds a Gigabit controller and three sockets, so it is built for peripherals and a network cable, not for external drives. What it will not do is behave like a dock: no charging, no video, and the USB-C port it occupies is one you no longer have. If those matter more than weight, our docking stations is where to look instead. And check the code before ordering, because the U3METALG3HUB is the USB-A twin.

Buyer’s Guide

Buy it if

Your laptop has USB-C and no Ethernet socket, and the network has to be wired. You want three full-size USB-A ports back at the same time. You want a metal 63 g unit with no drivers and nothing to plug into the wall.

Skip it if

You expected it to charge the laptop or drive a monitor — it does neither. Your laptop has no USB-C port: take the U3METALG3HUB. You need USB-C downstream ports, or you plan to run bus-powered hard drives.

Also consider

i-tec U3METALG3HUB if your host port is USB-A. A USB-C dock if charging and video are also needed. A hub with USB-C downstream ports if your accessories have moved to USB-C.
