ICY DOCK EZConvert MB703M2P-B — M.2 SATA SSD to 2.5″ Converter
M.2 SATA only, not NVMe2230 to 2280Tool-less, no screwsBecomes a 9.5 mm 2.5″ drive
The ICY DOCK EZConvert MB703M2P-B turns one M.2 SATA SSD into an ordinary 9.5 mm 2.5-inch SATA drive. The module drops into a one-piece plastic body, an adjustable locker clips into its screw notch, and the press-down lid closes — no screws and no tools. From that point on the host sees a standard 2.5-inch SATA drive with a 7-pin data and 15-pin power connector, so it works in a laptop bay, a desktop bay, a hot-swap cage or a docking station without any driver or firmware involved. ICY DOCK publishes no capacity limit, and the link runs at up to 6 Gbps, set by the SSD rather than by the adapter.
Compatibility — check before buying:
M.2 SATA only. This will not work with an M.2 NVMe SSD — ICY DOCK states that plainly, and it is the one thing to check before ordering. Look at the drive: an M.2 SATA module has a B-key or B+M-key edge (two notches) and its label says SATA; an NVMe module has a single M-key notch and says NVMe or PCIe. An NVMe drive in this converter will simply not appear. The near-identical part number MB705M2P-B is the NVMe one, converting M.2 NVMe to 2.5-inch U.2 — different product, different host requirement. Supported lengths here are 2230, 2242, 2260 and 2280. The finished assembly is 9.5 mm thick, so it needs a bay rated for 9.5 mm or more; a 7 mm-only slot in a thin laptop will not close over it. No cables and no mounting screws are in the box. Send us the SSD model and the machine it is going into and we will confirm both points.
Best For
✓ Reusing a laptop M.2 SATA SSD in a desktop or a caddy
✓ Fitting an M.2 SATA drive to a machine with no M.2 slot
✓ Hot-swap cages and mobile racks that take 2.5-inch drives
✓ Docking stations and duplicators for cloning M.2 SATA modules
✓ Servers and thin clients that only accept 2.5-inch SATA drives
✓ Bench work where an M.2 module has to be read quickly
Key Features
No screws, no screwdriver, no lost parts
The body is a single piece with an EZ-press lid and an adjustable M.2 locker that clips into the module’s screw notch. Fitting a drive takes seconds and there is no tiny M.2 retention screw to drop into a carpet. It handles 2230, 2242, 2260 and 2280 modules with the same mechanism.
A real 2.5-inch SATA drive at the other end
Once closed, the assembly presents a standard SATA 7-pin data and 15-pin power connector in the 2.5-inch position. Nothing on the host has to know an M.2 module is inside — it works in laptops, desktops, hot-swap cages, docks and duplicators alike, with no driver and no capacity limit published by ICY DOCK.
Built to be opened repeatedly
ICY DOCK rates the SATA connector for 10,000 insertion cycles and specifies the converter from 0 °C to 60 °C in operation, with CE, RoHS and REACH compliance. At 28 g it adds nothing to a drive tray, and the tool-less lid means a module can be swapped in and out as often as the work needs.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will my M.2 NVMe SSD work in this?
No, and this is the single most common wrong order. ICY DOCK states that the converter does not support M.2 NVMe SSDs. Check the drive label and the edge notches: two notches and the word SATA means it fits; one notch and NVMe or PCIe means it does not. Send us the model and we will confirm it for you.
How thick is it once the drive is fitted?
9.5 mm — the standard 2.5-inch height. It goes into any bay, caddy or cage rated for 9.5 mm or thicker. A slim laptop bay that only accepts 7 mm drives will not close over it.
Does it need screws or a screwdriver?
No. An adjustable locker clips into the SSD’s screw notch and the lid presses shut, which is why ICY DOCK calls the range EZConvert. Note that no mounting screws for the outer 2.5-inch position are supplied either — most laptop and cage mounts reuse their own.
Will it slow my SSD down?
No. There is no bridge chip and no protocol translation — the M.2 SATA module’s own SATA signals are routed to the 2.5-inch connector. You get up to 6 Gbps, exactly what the drive itself does in an M.2 slot.
Singular Expert Insight
This converter exists for one very specific and very common situation: a perfectly good M.2 SATA SSD pulled out of a laptop, and a machine that has 2.5-inch bays but no M.2 slot. It solves that cleanly and cheaply, with no driver and no speed penalty. What it cannot do is rescue an NVMe drive, because SATA and NVMe are different electrical worlds and no passive adapter bridges them — for an NVMe module you want a PCIe adapter card or an NVMe enclosure instead. If the M.2 drive is destined for a hot-swap tray, our
HDD and SSD enclosures section covers the cages this assembly drops into, and
storage accessories has the brackets that take it from 2.5-inch to a 3.5-inch bay if that is where it ends up.
Buyer’s Guide
Buy it if
You have an M.2 SATA SSD and a machine with a 2.5-inch bay, cage or dock; the drive is 2230 to 2280; and you want it mounted without screws or drivers.
Skip it if
Your M.2 drive is NVMe — it will not be detected here. Your target bay only takes 7 mm drives. Or you need cables and screws in the box, because neither is supplied.
Also consider
ICY DOCK MB705M2P-B if the module is M.2 NVMe and the host takes U.2, or an M.2 NVMe to PCIe adapter card if the machine has a spare PCIe slot instead.
