The ICY BOX IB-129SSK-B (article 20048) turns one 5.25-inch bay into a lockable front-loading drive slot. It is trayless: the drive is pushed straight into the rack without being screwed to a caddy first, which is the difference between a ten-second swap and a ten-minute one. The body is aluminium, so it acts as a heat spreader for the drive rather than trapping heat in plastic, and a keylock with two keys secures the drive in place. There is an LED on the front for drive activity, and hot-swap works as it does with any SATA drive on a hot-swap-capable port. It accepts drives up to 25.4 mm, which covers full-height 3.5-inch disks.
Compatibility — check before buying:
SATA only. RaidSonic’s datasheet title for this rack mentions SAS, but every specification row and the product description list SATA I, II and III — so we make no SAS claim, and if your drives are SAS you should tell us and we will find a rack that is specified for them. It needs one free 5.25-inch bay with a front opening, and it connects with a standard SATA 7-pin data and 15-pin power lead, neither of which is supplied. Hot-swap depends on the host: the rack passes the drive through, but the SATA port and the operating system have to allow a live change — on most desktop chipsets that means enabling AHCI hot-plug. The rack is fanless and has a 12 V connector for an optional fan, but no fan is included. In the box you get the rack, two keys and eight screws — no drive and no cables. Tell us the case and the drives and we will confirm the bay and the cables you need.

Trayless, so a swap takes seconds
There is no caddy to screw the drive into. The disk slides straight into the rack and the door closes over it, which is what makes a rotating backup set practical — you are not maintaining a shelf of caddies, just a shelf of bare drives. The keylock then secures the drive against accidental removal.
Aluminium body doing real work
The chassis is aluminium rather than plastic, which means the drive has somewhere to dump heat even with no airflow through the bay. If the machine runs warm or the drive is a high-capacity 7200 rpm disk, the rack also has a 12 V connector for an optional fan — that fan is not supplied, so specify one with the order if you want it.
Locked, and with an activity light
A keylock with two keys holds the drive in place, which matters when the machine is somewhere other people can reach it or when a drive must not be pulled mid-write. An LED on the front shows drive access, so you can see whether the disk is busy before you turn the key.

Skip it if
Your drives are SAS, which this rack does not specify. You have no 5.25-inch bay. Or you need active cooling out of the box, because the fan is optional and not supplied.
Also consider
