Intel Ethernet Network Adapter I226-T1 — 2.5GbE over Standard RJ45
2.5GbE RJ45PCIe 3.1 x1Intel I226Low power
The Intel Ethernet Network Adapter I226-T1 is a single-port 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet PCIe card that upgrades a desktop PC or small server from 1GbE to 2.5GbE over existing Cat5e or better cabling, using only a PCIe x1 slot.
It is Intel's own retail adapter built on the I226 controller, with auto-negotiation down to 1G, 100M and 10M, PXE boot and Wake-on-LAN, and a very low power draw of about 1.4 W at full speed.
Before you order: You only get 2.5 Gb/s when the switch, router or NAS port on the other end also supports 2.5GbE (or multi-gig). On a standard Gigabit switch the card links at 1 Gb/s.
What's in the Box
- 1x Intel Ethernet Network Adapter I226-T1
- Full-height and low-profile brackets (Intel offers the card with both)
- No network cable or driver media — drivers come from Intel or Windows Update
What It Means in Practice
- Around 2.5x the throughput of 1GbE for large file copies to a 2.5GbE NAS or between workstations.
- No rewiring in most offices: Cat5e is rated for 2.5GbE up to 100 m.
- A single x1 slot is enough, so it fits alongside a graphics card in most desktops.
- The low-profile bracket lets it go into slim SFF desktops as well as full-size towers.
What Will Not Work
- It will not run 5GbE or 10GbE — 2.5 Gb/s is the maximum.
- It will not reach 2.5 Gb/s on a 1GbE-only switch or router port.
- It has no SFP cage for fibre.
- Laptops and mini PCs without a free PCIe slot need a USB 2.5GbE adapter instead.

Singular Expert Insight · Buyer's Guide
The I226-T1 is the lowest-cost way to take a desktop past Gigabit: one x1 slot, no new cabling and Intel driver support. It pays off as soon as there is a 2.5GbE NAS or switch on the network — if there is not yet, pair it with one of our 2.5GbE switches.
✓ Buy it if you have (or are adding) a 2.5GbE NAS, switch or router and a desktop with a free PCIe slot.
✕ Skip it if you need 10GbE, or the PC has no PCIe slot — choose a 10GbE card or a USB 2.5GbE adapter.
→ Also consider the HP-branded I226-T1 (9P1U8AA) if you are fitting it to a supported HP Z workstation.
Not sure your switch or NAS supports 2.5GbE? Send us the model and we will check before you order.
