Kingston DataTraveler Kyson — 512 GB Capless Metal USB Flash Drive
200 MB/s readCapless metal case, 4 g512 GB capacityFive-year manufacturer warranty
The Kingston DataTraveler Kyson (DTKN/512GB) is a 512 GB USB Type-A flash drive in a metal case with a sliding capless design, 39 mm long and 4 g on a keyring. Kingston rates this capacity at 200 MB/s read and 60 MB/s write over USB 3.2 Gen 1. Those two figures are far apart, and the note below explains what that means in practice, because it decides whether the Kyson is the right drive for you or the wrong one.
Compatibility — check before buying:
At 512 GB the Kyson reads at 200 MB/s but writes at 60 MB/s. Kingston publishes the write figure only for the 128 GB to 512 GB band, and 60 MB/s means filling half a terabyte is an evening’s work rather than a coffee break. Reading off the drive is comfortable; copying large amounts onto it is not. If you write to the drive often, the DataTraveler SE9 G3 writes at 100 MB/s in the same Type-A metal format, and the HP x911w writes at 450 — ask us to price either. This is a USB Type-A drive and will not fit a USB-C-only laptop or phone without an adapter. There is no encryption and no software on this model — for that, the IronKey range is where to look. Kingston does not state what else is in the box beyond the drive.
Best For

✓ Windows, macOS, Linux and Chrome OS machines
Key Features
Metal, capless, 4 grams
39 x 12.6 x 4.9 mm in a metal case with a sliding capless mechanism and a keyring loop. There is no cap to lose and no plastic hinge to snap, which is how most flash drives actually die.
200 MB/s read at every capacity
Kingston rates 32 GB through 512 GB at the same 200 MB/s read. Buying the 512 GB does not cost you read speed — you are buying space at the same pace.
Half a terabyte on a keyring
512 GB in something 39 mm long and lighter than a house key. For carrying a media library or a full project folder without a cable or a case, that is the appeal.
Five years of manufacturer cover
Kingston publishes a 5-year warranty with free technical support on the Kyson, which is longer than most drives at this price and applies globally rather than in one region.

Singular Expert Insight
The Kyson is bought for the mechanism and the metal, and it earns that: 4 g, 39 mm, a sliding capless design and no plastic parts to break, with five years of Kingston cover behind it. Where you should think twice is the write speed. Kingston is honest enough to publish 60 MB/s at this capacity while plenty of competitors publish only a read figure, and 60 MB/s across 512 GB is a long evening. That does not make it a bad drive — it makes it an archive-and-carry drive rather than a working one, and if that is what you want, the price reflects it. The other thing to say plainly is that a 512 GB keyring drive with no encryption is a lot of data to lose in a car park. If any of it is client work, the IronKey Locker+ 50 G2 is the same idea with the protection built in.
Buyer’s Guide
Buy it if
You want 512 GB in a 4 g capless metal keyring drive with a five-year warranty, mainly to carry and read files rather than to fill repeatedly.
Skip it if
You copy large amounts onto the drive regularly — 60 MB/s write makes that slow — or the contents are confidential, since there is no encryption here.
Also consider
DataTraveler SE9 G3 for 100 MB/s write in a similar metal body, HP x911w for 450 MB/s write, or IronKey Locker+ 50 G2 if the data needs protecting.
