Kingston DataTraveler Micro 64 GB — A 25 mm Metal Drive You Can Leave Plugged In

64 GBUp to 200 MB/s read24.95 mm long, plug-and-stay5-year Kingston warranty

The Kingston DataTraveler Micro is a 64 GB USB 3.2 Gen 1 flash drive in a metal body just 24.95 mm long, low enough to sit permanently in a laptop or car USB port without catching on anything. Kingston publishes read speeds of up to 200 MB/s for the range and fits a key loop to the housing. It is a Type-A drive that needs no drivers and no software.

Compatibility — check before buying:
This is a USB Type-A drive with no USB-C connector, so it does not go into a phone, a tablet or a USB-C-only laptop without an adapter, and none is supplied. The model it is most often confused with is Kingston’s own DataTraveler microDuo 3C, which is also marketed at up to 200 MB/s but carries both a USB-A and a USB-C plug. If reaching a phone matters to you, that is the one to buy. Note also that the plug-and-stay design cuts both ways: it is ideal for a car stereo, a games console or a laptop you never unplug, but a body this short is fiddly to pull out of a recessed port and easy to mislay when it is not in one. Kingston does not publish a write speed for this drive at any capacity.

Best For

✓ Leaving permanently in a laptop, car stereo or games console USB port
✓ Expanding storage on a machine where a full-size stick would stick out and snap
✓ Keyring carry — the loop is moulded into the metal housing
✓ Carrying documents, photos and installers between computers
✓ Anyone who wants a metal-bodied drive rather than plastic
✓ Travel, where a drive that does not protrude survives being shoved in a bag

Key Features

24.95 mm of metal
The whole drive is 24.95 x 12.2 x 4.5 mm in a premium metal casing. Plugged in, almost nothing protrudes, which is exactly what you want in a laptop that lives in a rucksack.

Up to 200 MB/s read
Kingston publishes this figure across the 64 GB, 128 GB and 256 GB versions, so the 64 GB is not the slow one of the family. Reading a large video file off it takes seconds rather than minutes.

Built-in key loop
A loop is part of the casing rather than a plastic add-on, which matters on a drive small enough to vanish in a pocket.

Plug and stay, no software
No drivers, no bundled utility, no setup. Windows, macOS, Linux and ChromeOS all mount it as ordinary removable storage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I leave the DataTraveler Micro plugged into my laptop all the time?
That is what it is designed for. At 24.95 mm long and 4.5 mm thick it sits almost flush, so it will not catch on a bag or snap off if the laptop is knocked. The same applies to a car stereo, a smart TV or a games console USB port.
Why is no write speed listed?
Kingston publishes a read figure for this range and no write figure at any capacity. Its only related statement is a footnote comparing writes to old USB 2.0 drives, which is a comparison rather than a specification. Rather than convert a footnote into a number, we leave it unstated.
Is the 64 GB version slower than the 128 GB or 256 GB?
No. Kingston prints up to 200 MB/s read across the whole 64 GB to 256 GB range, so capacity does not change the published speed. Buy the size you need.
What is the difference between DataTraveler Micro and microDuo 3C?
The connector. The Micro is USB-A only in a 25 mm metal body meant to stay plugged in. The microDuo 3C is a dual-ended drive with USB-A on one side and USB-C on the other, for moving files between a computer and a phone. Both are quoted at up to 200 MB/s read, so the choice is about ports, not speed.
Singular Expert Insight
Most flash drives are designed to be carried; this one is designed to be forgotten. The whole point of a 25 mm metal body with a 4.5 mm profile is that it can live in a port for years — extra storage in a laptop with a small SSD, a music library in a car, media on a console. Judged as a pocket stick it is arguably too small, which is why Kingston puts a key loop on it. Two things to be clear about: it reads fast at up to 200 MB/s but Kingston never states how fast it writes, and it is Type-A only. If you want the same speed with a USB-C end for a phone, the microDuo 3C sits alongside it in our USB flash drives range. For genuinely large working sets, an external SSD is the better answer than any stick.

Buyer’s Guide

Buy it if

You want permanent extra storage in a laptop, car or console port without anything sticking out, and up to 200 MB/s read with a 5-year Kingston term suits you.

Skip it if

You need to plug into a phone or a USB-C-only laptop, you want a published write speed, or you would rather have a full-size drive that is easy to grip and pull out of a tight port.

Also consider

Kingston DataTraveler microDuo 3C for the same read speed with a USB-C end. Kingston DataTraveler Exodia M for a larger capacity in a conventional sliding-cap body. An external SSD for large working files.
