Kingston IronKey Locker+ 50 G2 32 GB — Hardware-Encrypted USB Drive
AES 256-bit hardware encryptionFIPS 197 certified145 MB/s read, 115 MB/s write32 GB
The Kingston IronKey Locker+ 50 G2 (IKLP50G2/32GB) is a 32 GB USB 3.2 Gen 1 drive that encrypts everything written to it in hardware, with AES 256-bit in XTS mode and FIPS 197 certification. The encryption cannot be switched off, so a drive left in a taxi is an unreadable brick rather than a data breach. It is aimed at anyone carrying client files, HR records, legal documents or backups outside the office.
Compatibility — check before buying:
Operating system support is narrow and this is the single most important thing to check. Kingston lists Windows 11 and macOS 13.x to 26.x for the G2. There is no Windows 10 support, no Linux and no ChromeOS. If your fleet still runs Windows 10, this drive is not the right choice and we would rather tell you now. Note also that FIPS 197 is a certification of the AES algorithm itself — it is not a FIPS 140-2 or 140-3 validation, and Kingston publishes no FIPS 140 level for this model. If your tender requires FIPS 140, ask us and we will quote a validated drive instead.
Best For
✓ Carrying client or patient files outside the office
✓ Auditors, lawyers and consultants working on site
✓ Handing a dataset to a third party securely
✓ Meeting an internal policy that says removable media must be encrypted
✓ Replacing unencrypted drives across a small team
✓ Anyone whose bag has been lost once already
Key Features
Encryption you cannot forget to turn on
AES 256-bit encryption in XTS mode runs on the drive itself and cannot be disabled. There is no software to install on the host and no setting to get wrong — if the drive is unlocked you see your files, and if it is not, there is nothing readable on it at all.
Two passwords, two roles
The drive supports an Admin password and a User password. Passwords can be Complex (6 to 16 characters using at least three of the four character types) or a Passphrase of 10 to 64 characters. A read-only mode is available for handing a drive over without risking changes to the contents.
Ten wrong tries and it wipes
After 10 consecutive failed password attempts the drive protects itself. If a User password is exhausted and an Admin password exists, the administrator can reset it. If the Admin password is exhausted, or the drive is in user-only mode, the drive crypto-erases itself and the data is gone permanently. That is the intended behaviour, not a fault.
Everyday speed, not a compromise
Kingston rates the Locker+ 50 G2 at up to 145 MB/s read and 115 MB/s write across its 32 GB to 256 GB range. Encryption is handled on the drive, so it does not tax the host machine and it does not turn every copy into a wait.

Singular Expert Insight
Encrypted drives fail in practice for two reasons: someone turns the encryption off, or the drive is too slow to live with and gets abandoned for an ordinary one. The Locker+ 50 G2 closes both doors — encryption is always on and cannot be disabled, and at 145 MB/s read and 115 MB/s write it is quick enough that nobody reaches for the unencrypted drive instead. Two things decide whether it fits you. The first is the operating system list: Windows 11 and macOS 13 or later, with no Windows 10 and no Linux. The second is the certification wording: FIPS 197 is the AES algorithm, not a FIPS 140 module validation, and buyers working to a formal standard need to know the difference before they order. At 32 GB this is the size for documents, spreadsheets and databases rather than video libraries; the same drive is available at 64 GB and above if you need the room.
Buyer’s Guide
Buy it if
You must carry confidential files outside the office and want encryption that cannot be switched off or forgotten. Your machines run Windows 11 or macOS 13 or later, and 32 GB is enough for documents rather than media.
Skip it if
Any machine that has to read the drive still runs Windows 10, or you need Linux support. Skip it too if your policy specifically requires FIPS 140-2 or 140-3 validation rather than FIPS 197.
Also consider
Kingston IronKey Locker+ 50 G2 64 GB if you need more room with the same protection. Verbatim Keypad Secure if you would rather unlock with a physical PIN pad and no host software at all. A standard DataTraveler if the files are simply not confidential and you want the space for less money.
